NEW DELHI: Zimbabwe clinched a nail-biting victory against Afghanistan at the Harare Sports Club in a thrilling conclusion to the opening match of their three-game T20I series on Wednesday.
The feisty encounter saw Zimbabwe chasing down a target of 145, securing the win with a last-ball four-wicket triumph. The hero of the hour was Tashinga Musekiwa, who coolly navigated the pressure of the final over to score the crucial 11 runs needed for Zimbabwe to cross the finish line with just six wickets down.
The foundation of Zimbabwe’s successful chase was solidly built on a 75-run partnership between Brian Bennett and Dion Myers. Bennett’s near half-century contribution of 49 runs and Myers’ valuable 32 runs were instrumental in setting the stage for the dramatic finish. Their partnership not only stabilized Zimbabwe’s innings but also positioned them within striking distance of the target.

On the other side, Afghanistan, having opted to bat first after winning the toss, put up a competitive total of 144-6. Their innings was significantly bolstered by a resilient 79-run stand for the sixth wicket between Karim Janat and Mohammed Nabi.
Janat’s unbeaten knock of 54 runs showcased his skill and determination, making him a crucial player for Afghanistan. Despite their efforts, Zimbabwe’s bowling attack, led by Richard Ngarava who impressively took 3-28 in his four overs, managed to keep Afghanistan’s total within reach.
The match was not just a contest of runs and wickets but also a display of strategic gameplay and mental fortitude. Zimbabwe’s ability to stay composed under pressure, especially in the game’s final moments, speaks volumes about their team’s character and resilience.
