Sunil Gavaskar explains why the momentum is with Australia, not India

NEW DELHI: Defeated in Perth, Australia fought back with a 10-wicket victory in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide against India to level the five-match series 1-1 in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Now with the third Test set to get underway at Gabba on Saturday, former Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes the momentum is with Australia, not India.

IND vs AUS: India batting has been a major cause of worry

The official broadcaster of the series shared a clip on their official X handle in which Gavaskar says, “The momentum that India got after the win in Perth, that went away in the ten-day gap before the second Test. Now the momentum is with Australia because they have won the Adelaide Test and after just three days the Gabba Test starts. So the momentum is certainly with Australia.”
Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh adds in the video, “I feel this series is the toughest because both teams have the caliber to bounce back. What happened to Australia in Perth they wouldn’t have thought that, and also India wouldn’t have thought what would happen at Adelaide after the magnificent victory in Perth. And as Sir (Gavaskar) said the long gap does break the momentum and that happened here. But now if we look at it as a three-match series, India have to win at least 2 matches and I feel their best chance to win would be in Sydney and Melbourne. If India play their best cricket at Gabba and come out as winners, then India will win either in Melbourne or Sydney. The series that now stands at 1-1, shows that both teams have it in them to make a comeback. Australia came back magnificently to win in Adelaide and it is India’s turn to stage a comeback.”

The last time India played a Test at the Gabba in January 2021, Rishabh Pant hit an unbeaten 89 which helped a depleted India chase down 328, 324 of those runs on the final day.
Pant’s knock helped India break Australia’s 32-year undefeated streak at the ground.
