India name squad for U19 Women’s Asia Cup 2024, Niki Prasad to lead

India, on Thursday, December 12, named their squad for the inaugural edition of the U19 Women’s Asia Cup to be held at the Bayuemas Cricket Oval in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Batting all-rounder Niki Prasad has been named as the skipper.

Prasad recently led India B to victory in the U19 tri-series in Pune against India A and South Africa. The teenager scored 49 runs off 31 balls in the final and helped India B beat South Africa by eight wickets at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

Among the ones in the squad, Gongadi Trisha and Shabnam Shakeel were a part of the winning team in the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa last year. Trisha scored 116 runs from seven matches with a top score of 57.

Shakil played only one game in the tournament where she picked up one wicket at an economy rate of 10.25. Shakeel has also played for the Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and was a part of the Indian squad in their home series against South Africa.

India are placed alongside Pakistan and Nepal in Group A. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Malaysia are a part of Group B. India are scheduled to begin their campaign on Sunday, Decemebr 15 against Pakistan, followed by their match against Nepal on Tuesday, December 17.

The group matches will be followed by the Super Four, after which the final is scheduled to take place on Sunday, December 22.
