R Ashwin’s retirement from international cricket has prompted numerous tributes, including a notable exchange with fellow off-spinner Washington Sundar. The interaction on social media suggested a potential passing of the baton in Indian cricket.
Following Ashwin’s shock retirement announcement after the drawn third Test at the Gabba, Sundar shared a heartfelt tribute on social media.

R Ashwin announces retirement from Test cricket

“More than just a team mate, you have been an inspiration, Ash anna. It’s been an honour to share the field and dressing room with you.”
“Coming from the same state of Tamil Nadu, I have grown up watching you from the close corners of Chepauk to playing against and alongside you. Every moment has been a privilege. The learnings, both on and off the field, are something I will carry forever. Wishing you success and happiness in whatever comes next.”
Ashwin responded on his X account with a phrase from a popular Tamil film, indicating a close camaraderie. ‘Thuppakiya pudinga Washi! The 2 minutes you spoke that night in the get-together was the best.”

Sundar, also from Chennai, is viewed as a potential successor to Ashwin in India’s spin-bowling department. He seems to be the preferred choice for the current Indian coaching staff.
This preference was evident in Sundar’s selection over both Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja for the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Perth. In that match, Sundar secured two second-innings wickets and contributed with scores of four and 29 as India triumphed by 295 runs.

Sundar’s career statistics currently read 24 wickets and 387 runs across seven Test matches. With Ashwin’s departure, the Indian team will rely on Sundar and Jadeja in the remaining two Tests against Australia in Melbourne and Sydney. The series is currently tied at 1-1.
