In the ongoing five-match Test series against England, Team India`s KL Rahul has been showcasing his `A-game` and former Team India cricketer Ravi Shastri was nothing short of praise for the incumbent opening batsman.
Speaking about Rahul`s current form, Shastri told ICC, “I think there was not one person in the world who denied his potential and said that he (Rahul) was not talented. What annoyed people was, with that kind of talent, he was not delivering. And in this series, you`re seeing the best of Rahul”.
So far in the three concluded Test matches, KL Rahul has garnered 375 runs, including two centuries and a half-century. With this, he is also the fourth-highest leading scorer in the ongoing series.
The former Team India head coach also pointed out the technical changes Rahul has made in his batting.
“What I am seeing is a slight adjustment he`s made with his front foot, in his stance and while defending. It just opened up a bit, which allows his back to come through cleanly. Even when he`s hitting it towards mid-wicket, it`s the full face of the blade,” he said.
The 33-year-old batsman also became the player with the joint-second-highest centuries in Test cricket on English soil. Currently, he has four centuries, and legendary Rahul Dravid has been enjoying the top spot on the list with six centuries.
Shastri further feels that Rahul should make the upcoming three to four years count in his career. He also added that a lot of centuries are on Rahul`s way.
“He`s at his prime. He has got to make these next three, four years count. And I see him getting a lot of hundreds because he`s playing a lot of cricket in India as well. So whatever that average is, he should be close to 50,” concluded the 63-year-old.
Currently, India is trailing by 1-2 against the `Three Lions` in the ongoing five-match Test series. Team India will now clash against England in the fourth Test match, which is scheduled to be played from July 23 in Manchester. The contest will be a do-or-die match for the visitors and will be interesting to see if their lead pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, lines up for the match.
