Shardul Thakur said that he is aiming to make a return to the Indian team, eyeing a spot in the squad for the ODI World Cup in 2027. Shardul was part of the squad for the England tour earlier in the year but last played an ODI game during the World Cup 2023 against Bangladesh.
The all-rounder is currently leading Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy after being appointed as the captain after Ajinkya Rahane stepped down from the role. Speaking to PTI after the drawn game against Chhatisgarh, Shardul said that he is aiming to keep performing in domestic cricket and produce match-winning performances for his side as it will help catch the eye of the selectors.
The 34-year-old said that with the World Cup being in South Africa in 2027 and it may open up a spot at No.8.
“What is important for me is to keep playing matches and perform,” Thakur said when asked about his future.
“To get back into the Indian team, I also need to keep having those good, match-winning performances, which is eventually going to help in the selection.”
“And, yes, the ODI World Cup is also in South Africa so there might be a place open for a bowling all-rounder at No. 8. I am, of course, eyeing that spot,” said Shardul.
I AM READY
Shardul said that he is ready to represent the Indian team whenever he is called upon.
“Whenever the Indian team needs me or whenever I am selected, I am ready to play international cricket. My preparation is such that if tomorrow I am asked to play international cricket, I am ready,” Shardul said.
The Mumbai captain has played played 47 ODIs, 25 T20Is and 13 Tests for India.
Shardul also confirmed that Yashasvi Jaiswal will be available for Mumbai during their next Ranji Trophy game.
“He’s fairly experienced in international cricket and domestic cricket as well. He has never disappointed to entertain us, to perform. He’s put up big scores. We’ve seen in both the places, domestically and internationally,” Thakur said.
“When he’s set, he makes sure he scores a big hundred and that’s a big positive. There are expectations from everyone. Even when he comes, he’s expected to perform for the team.”
