IND vs SA: Kagiso Rabada ruled out of 2nd Test, Temba Bavuma confirms

South Africa suffered a major setback ahead of the second Test against India in Guwahati, as premier fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out once again. Rabada, who missed the first Test in Kolkata due to a rib injury sustained during a training session, has not recovered sufficiently to take the field for the next match starting Saturday, November 22.

Confirming the development on the eve of the Test, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma said the medical team was unwilling to risk Rabada’s fitness, especially with his recovery still incomplete. “Kagiso has been ruled out of the second Test,” Bavuma said, adding that the pacer remained an important part of the setup but needed more time to heal. Rabada’s absence will force the visitors into another strategic reshuffle, having already managed to secure a 30-run win in the series opener without him.

Bavuma also shared his early impressions of the Guwahati surface at the Barsapara Stadium, which is hosting a Test match for the first time. He noted that the pitch resembled the kind of conditions typically found in the subcontinent — good for batting early before the spinners gradually take control.

“This wicket looks a lot fresher and will be more consistent in terms of variability compared to Kolkata,” Bavuma explained.

“We will have another look in the morning and decide on Kagiso’s replacement.” His assessment suggests a surface that may offer true bounce and steady pace initially, but is expected to assist slow bowlers as the match progresses.

The Proteas captain further emphasised that the pitch had the classic characteristics of a sub-continental track: “The first two days should be good for batting, after which the spinners will come into play.” This indicates that South Africa might consider strengthening their spin resources or opting for a bowling attack that can adapt quickly as conditions evolve.

With Guwahati entering the Test arena for the very first time, both teams will be venturing into unfamiliar territory. The untested nature of the Barsapara pitch adds an element of intrigue to the contest, especially with key players like Rabada missing and India seeking to bounce back from their defeat in Kolkata.

As the teams prepare for a crucial second Test, the spotlight now shifts to South Africa’s selection choices and how both sides adapt to the new venue’s unique conditions.
