‘Dhurandhar’ plot synopsis

Directed by Aditya Dhar, the film’s official synopsis has also been circling the web. It reads, “A mysterious traveller infiltrates the Karachi mafia and becomes embroiled in a web of political corruption in this action thriller.” This is a stark contrast from reports doing the rounds which claim that the film is based on the life of decorated Indian Army officer, late Major Mohit Sharma.

Film faces legal challenge from Major Mohit Sharma‘s family

As expectations around ‘Dhurandhar’ continue to soar, thanks to its gritty teaser, the film found itself in the centre of a growing controversy. According to a report by Bar and Bench, the parents of late Major Mohit Sharma, who was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal, have approached the Delhi High Court seeking a stay on the film’s release. The petition alleges that ‘Dhurandhar’ is inspired by Sharma’s covert operations and martyrdom, and that Ranveer Singh’s character appears to be modelled on him. The family claims the filmmakers neither sought permission from them nor from the Indian Army, and further argues that the movie may compromise posthumous rights and disclose sensitive military tactics without clearance.

Aditya Dhar issues clarification

Amid the speculation, director Dhar stepped in with an official clarification on his social media handle. Responding to Major Sharma’s brother, Dhar tweeted, “Hi, sir – Our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification. I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit Sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family, and in a way that truly honours his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy it has left for all of us.A date for the Delhi High Court hearing is still awaited.
