Bengaluru experienced unusually cold and wet conditions on Sunday as the impact of Cyclone Ditvaah continued to affect weather patterns across South Interior Karnataka. Since Friday, the city has been witnessing a steady drop in temperature, persistent cloudy sky and occasional drizzle, making November 30 one of the coldest and dismal days of this season.
Unlike Bengaluru’s normal winters, where the cold is confined to early morning and late evening, this time its impact lasted throughout the day, and sunlight was largely absent.
Cold increased due to drizzle and cloudy weather
Light drizzle occurred in many parts of Bengaluru on Sunday morning, which further increased the cold. Due to cloudy sky for the second consecutive day, outdoor activities slowed down considerably.
Vegetable vendors in local markets, auto drivers waiting for passengers and morning walkers were seen struggling with the sudden change in weather. Many residents said the cold was felt more due to a combination of wind, humidity and low daytime temperatures.
Weather officials say the combination of rain-bringing systems and clouds has prevented daytime heat, keeping the atmosphere cool throughout the day.
Why is Cyclone Ditvah affecting Bengaluru?
Cyclone Ditvaha, which is currently close to Sri Lanka, is expected to move towards the southern coast of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Even though the cyclone is not heading directly towards Karnataka, its outer circulation has significantly changed the weather patterns in the southern peninsula.
As a result, districts of South Interior Karnataka including Bengaluru and adjoining areas are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall throughout the day. Moisture-laden winds and dense clouds have become major weather drivers.
Meteorologists say this indirect effect is enough to cause a drop in temperatures and prolonged cloudy conditions, especially in the high plateau areas like Bengaluru.
A drop in temperature was recorded across the city
Due to the impact of the cyclone, there has been a significant drop in both the minimum and maximum temperatures.
In Bengaluru, the minimum temperature in the last 24 hours was recorded at around 16 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature was around 25 degrees Celsius. Due to continuous cloud cover, the day temperature is expected to be below normal.
Weather experts have warned that the minimum temperature may drop further, possibly reaching 14 degrees Celsius in some parts of the city by night or morning.
Across Karnataka, north interior districts recorded minimum temperatures between 12 to 14 degrees Celsius, while south interior districts, including Bengaluru, saw temperatures between 14 to 16 degrees Celsius.
Weather forecast for the next 24 hours
Meteorological Department officials predict that Bengaluru will remain cloudy for the rest of Sunday and Monday with light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places.
Some parts of the city may experience brief drizzle, while other parts may experience only dense clouds. There is also a possibility of mist or fog in low-lying areas in the morning.
The maximum temperature is expected to be around 22 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to be around 18 degrees Celsius.
Outlook for the next two days
Similar weather is likely to persist in Bengaluru in the next 48 hours. There is a possibility of cloudy sky, there is also a possibility of light rain.
Morning fog or mist may affect visibility in some areas, especially in the early hours. Temperatures are expected to be below seasonal normal, putting the city in a prolonged cold spell.
However, meteorologists indicate that the weather conditions are likely to stabilize soon.
When will the sun return?
According to weather experts, a change in conditions is expected from December 1. As the cyclone moves further from the Ditvah region, the cloud cover is likely to gradually reduce, allowing sunlight to return.
With the return of sunshine, the day temperature in Bengaluru is expected to rise gradually, providing some respite from the persistent cold.
What residents should keep in mind
Residents are advised to be prepared for sudden drizzle, avoid being outside for long periods during the morning and stay warm, especially children and the elderly.
Those traveling early or late should be careful, as fog and wet roads may affect visibility and traction.
While the cold spell is expected to be short-lived, Sunday is a day of sweaters, umbrellas and patience as Bengaluru recovers from the lingering effects of Cyclone Ditvaah.
