Chhath Puja fever has officially made its way across the globe, with Indian-Americans in Virginia gathering in large numbers to celebrate this deeply revered festival. Originally rooted in the heartlands of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, Chhath Puja is now a global event as communities continue to honour its rituals and spread its magic far and wide. This year, hundreds joined the celebration along Virginia’s riverbanks, marking each day of the festival with enthusiasm and reverence.

In Virginia, the celebrations took on a special charm. Local Indian-American families came together, having worked with park and county authorities to secure a scenic spot by the river for their rituals. The gathering has come a long way from its modest beginnings; only 7-8 families participated in the first event, but now, over 700 people flock to the riverbank to celebrate, showcasing the growing popularity and hype surrounding Chhath in the diaspora.

For many, Chhath Puja is an emotional bridge to their roots. “When we first arrived here, we worried about how to celebrate such an important festival in a new country,” one resident told PTI. “Finding a riverbank was a challenge. But we managed, and now it’s something people look forward to every year!”

Curiosity among locals

The best part? The festival has sparked curiosity among locals, who eagerly accept offerings of the traditional “Thekua,” a sweet fritter associated with the festival. “Americans now ask for prasad! It’s amazing to see them enjoy Thekua,” another resident shared with a laugh. The celebration has grown beyond just a gathering; it’s a cherished moment of unity, cultural pride, and shared joy that’s only getting stronger each year.

Not only Virginia, people also celebrated the festival in California, New Jersey,  Texas and Massachusetts, and other places.

Chhath Puja 2024

The four-day Chhath festival, which started on November 6 and concluded today, November 8, is more than just a religious observance—it’s a tribute to nature and a prayer for health and happiness. Devotees kick things off with a day of Nahay Khay, where they cleanse their homes and bodies, symbolising purification before the big event. Next comes “Kharna,” where they observe a rigorous fast from sunrise to sunset, abstaining even from water, before breaking it with offerings prepared with utmost devotion. The third and fourth days are packed with the main Chhath rituals, where participants flock to riverbanks and ponds at dawn and dusk to offer “arghya” (prayers) to the setting and rising sun.

Chhath Puja continues to thrive as a reminder of tradition and family. The festival’s blessings and spiritual depth make it cherished not just back home but wherever its devoted followers may be.
