Former India spinner Anil Kumble expressed his disappointment with Ravichandran Ashwin as the veteran player announced his retirement from international cricket on December 18, Wednesday. The disappointment, however, stemmed from Ashwin not surpassing Kumble’s record tally of 619 Test wickets. Ashwin called time on his international career after India’s third Test against Australia ended in a draw at The Gabba. Day 5 witnessed heavy rains, preventing the match from proceeding further. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy series remained tied at 1-1. What followed next was nothing short of a shock, as Ashwin announced his retirement.
“Congratulations, Ash, on a fantastic career. You’ve been a champion bowler for India, a champion all-rounder for India. You’ll certainly be missed. It’s not that easy, carrying that kind of expectation day in and day out. You’ve done it right throughout your career. You’ve been a match-winner for India, and Team India will certainly miss you,” Kumble said in a video shared by ESPNcricinfo.
Ashwin brings curtains down to his career
Ashwin, earlier, had mentioned that he would retire the moment he reached the 618-wicket mark as a tribute to Kumble, India’s highest wicket-taker in Tests. However, the veteran ended his career with 537 Test wickets, securing his place as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format.
“I, for one, am a bit disappointed that you ended your career today at the international level. Ideally, I would have wanted to see you go beyond 619, but you have your reasons for that,” Kumble added.
Kumble’s wish for Ashwin
Kumble also wished Ashwin the best of luck for his future endeavours.
“All the best to you in your second chapter. And I am sure it will be as glorious as chapter one. So, Ash, here’s to a fantastic career that you’ve had for India. And congratulations once again. All the very best. Catch you soon,” Kumble concluded.
R Ashwin made the bold call to retire from international cricket mid-way through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia on Wednesday, The rumours started to circulate during Day 5 of the Gabba Test when Ashwin was seen sharing a hug with Virat Kohli in the dressing room. He then made his way to the post-match press conference alongside Rohit Sharma and quickly announced his retirement and left.
