Disputes regarding property within families are not a new thing, but sometimes such a case comes to light which leaves even experienced officers shocked. In Karnataka’s Gadag district, a disturbing allegation has emerged in which a wife is accused of locking up her own husband and treating him harshly because she feared losing her property.
What started as a dispute over land and money appears to have escalated into a situation where a man was reportedly confined for several days, cut off from the outside world and denied even basic needs.
A tin room that became a prison
The incident took place at Kalaburagi Oni in Betageri. Local people say that they became suspicious after seeing that 55-year-old Gajanan, who lives in the neighbourhood, was not seen outside for several days. According to his claims, his wife Shobha had locked him in a small tin shed next to their house.
Residents allege that the confinement lasted for about fifteen days and no one in the family allowed Gajanan to go out. They say the shed was secured from the outside, turning it into a temporary cell where she was kept without her consent.
Faced with rigorous imprisonment due to fear of losing property
Neighbors say the root cause of the drastic move was property. Gajanan reportedly owns land and plots, and there were rumors that he may transfer a part of it to someone outside his family.
According to local people, Shobha feared that she and her children would get nothing from these transfers. She alleges that this fear forced her to take the extreme step of restricting her husband’s activities and keeping him under strict surveillance. Some people also claimed that he refused to let her go out even for basic activities, which raised concerns among people living nearby.
The community comes forward and alerts the police
As days passed and concern grew, many residents eventually decided to alert authorities. He informed the Gadag police that a man was kept in a tin room and was allegedly being treated inhumanely. Responding quickly, PSI Lakshmappa Aari and his team visited the spot.
Upon reaching the location, they reportedly found Gajanan inside the room and proceeded to free him from captivity. His condition and overall condition became a topic of discussion in the area, with many residents expressing anger and disbelief at what happened in their neighborhood.
Wife denied wrongdoing and cited mental health
When interrogated by the police, Shobha denied the allegations. She insisted that she had not locked up her husband and claimed that he was mentally unstable.
According to her explanation, the family had kept her indoors only to ensure her safety and prevent her from wandering outside in unexpected situations. However, neighbors disputed this claim, and pointed to earlier incidents where she was allegedly sent out of the house and left without support.
Property dispute adds another layer of drama
As police interrogated those involved, another version of events emerged. Shobha told the authorities that Gajanan was giving money and property to his sister and the family only intervened because they feared losing their property. Instead of calming the situation, this clarification escalated the conflict.
Neighbors and media personnel gathered at the scene reported that some of the woman’s family members reacted aggressively, shouting at both the journalists and the police. What started as a private dispute soon turns into a scene of public drama, reflecting the tensions brewing within the family.
Police investigation is ongoing
With conflicting accounts from the wife, neighbors and relatives, the police have started confirming the details. The focus now is on determining whether Gajanan was held against his will, whether he was deprived of basic needs, and whether the imprisonment was directly linked to the property dispute.
The outcome of the investigation is awaited, but the incident has already sparked a wider conversation about domestic disputes in the region, land ownership and the lengths people will go to when fear and distrust prevail.
