Padma Awards 2026: The Home Ministry on Sunday revealed the names of the recipients who will receive the prestigious Padma Award, the country’s highest civilian honour.
President Draupadi Murmu approved the conferment of 131 Padma awards, which include five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri awards.
In the list of awardees, 19 were women and six were from Foreigner/NRI/PIO/OCI category. At least 16 people were honored posthumously.
Padma awards, among the country’s highest civilian honours, are presented in three categories – Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. Awards are given in various disciplines/fields of activities, such as- Arts, Social Work, Public Affairs, Science and Engineering, Trade and Industry, Medicine, Literature and Education, Sports, Civil Services, etc.
‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of a high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day.
