Judicial Layout in Bengaluru is an affluent locality with many homeowners living abroad. The area is well-connected, and security is often managed by homeowners through remote CCTV setup.

Despite all the technology protecting houses in this sophisticated neighbourhood, a 19-year-old laborer cleaned a house and made away with gold and diamond jewelery worth Rs 3 crore. Although the scale of the theft is shocking, the meticulous planning behind this act reveals a frightening level of patience and observation.

a long term plan

The suspect, Velaram, is originally from Rajasthan and had come to Bengaluru a few months ago in search of livelihood. He found employment as a day laborer who specialized in cutting tiles and installing granite at a construction site. It was from here that his criminal ambitions began to take shape.

Right next to his workplace was a luxury villa owned by a family settled in the United States. Since the owners visited their Indian residence only once or twice a year, the house remained empty for long periods. To a casual observer, it was just another cool property. But for Velaram, it became a goal that required careful planning.

Velaram lived a double life for about six months. During the day, he worked as a laborer along with 20 other youth from his home state. During recess and at night, he studied the neighboring villas closely.

They monitored security activities, mapped the internal layout of the rooms and ultimately identified the exact location of the heavy-duty locker. His proximity to home allowed him to carefully plan the crime, without arousing suspicion among his co-workers or neighbors.

Robbery and digital trap

On the day of the crime, Velaram executed his plan with utmost precision. He entered the villa through the sliding glass door, a weakness he had probably identified months earlier. Although he did not know how much wealth was inside the locker, he trusted his luck.

After breaking into the locker, he finds an item that exceeds his expectations. Inside were gold jewelery weighing approximately 1.8 kg, high value diamond jewelery and a large amount of cash.

Overwhelmed by the success of his plan, he packed the valuables in a bag and immediately fled the city. Without informing his fellow employees or friends, he went straight back to his village in Rajasthan to hide the loot.

“He believed that by keeping a distance of thousands of kilometers between himself and the crime scene, he had managed to escape clean. However, he had underestimated the technology that the home owners relied on to monitor their property from the US,” the police told News 18 Kannada after cracking the case.

a virtual arrest

Despite being on a different continent, the homeowners remained vigilant. While checking their remote CCTV feed through a smartphone app, they noticed suspicious activity inside the house. High-definition cameras had captured Velaram’s every move, from entering the house to exiting with the bag.

The owners immediately contacted relatives in Bengaluru, who lodged a complaint at the Yelahanka police station. With clear CCTV footage, the police were able to identify the suspect almost immediately.

A special team from Yelahanka police station tracked his mobile signal and travel route to Rajasthan. In a swift cross-state operation, officials intercepted Velaram at his home, arrested him and recovered all the belongings.

A lesson in modern vigilance

This incident serves as a double reminder for urban residents. On the one hand, this highlights the growing threat of insider surveillance, where employees at nearby sites can closely observe homeowners’ habits and routines. On the other hand, it shows how modern technology, such as remote-access CCTV systems, can become a powerful tool in solving crimes.

The 19-year-old’s six-month plan was destroyed in a matter of days by the digital eye that never sleeps. As Bengaluru continues to expand, this case stands as a cautionary tale.
