Italy cricket has been embroiled in controversy just days after its historic appearance at the Men’s T20 World Cup. According to a report by Sky Sports, a senior official within the Italian Cricket Federation has been investigated and suspended following allegations of sexual assault.
The individual is accused of inappropriately touching a member of Italy’s women’s national team, with the complaint reportedly filed with police last year.
The development has cast a shadow over what had been a landmark moment for Italian cricket on the global stage. The federation has acknowledged the matter and stated that it will cooperate fully with the relevant judicial authorities as investigations continue.
“The Italian Cricket Federation reiterates that its conduct is guided by principles of fairness, transparency and the protection of its registered members, as well as by the ethical and civic standards that underpin the sporting system,” FCRI said in a statement.
“The federation therefore defers to the competent judicial authorities for any determinations arising from the matter.”
HOW ITALY PERFORMED IN THE T20 WORLD CUP?
Italy made their maiden appearance at the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and won plenty of admirers with their spirited performances. They competed without injured captain Wayne Madsen, who was ruled out after dislocating his shoulder in the opener. Despite the setback, the Italian Azzurri showed remarkable fight against teams such as Nepal, England and Scotland.
Italy began with a 73-run defeat to Scotland, where Ben Manenti top-scored with 52. They then secured their first-ever T20 World Cup win, thrashing Nepal by 10 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The victory was powered by unbeaten half-centuries from Anthony Mosca and Justin Mosca, along with impressive spells from Crishan Kalugamage and Manenti.
Against England, Italy posted 178, with Manenti blasting 60 off 25 balls. They closed their campaign with a 42-run loss to West Indies, where Manenti again contributed with bat and ball. Following his outstanding performances, Manenti jumped 160 places to No.20 in the latest ICC all-rounders’ rankings.
Italy finished with one win from four matches, marking a memorable debut on the world stage.
