`All teams have a plan for me, but I back my instincts`: Abhishek Sharma

India’s left-handed opener Abhishek Sharma said that his batting approach is built around continuing to play an aggressive brand of cricket after hitting a magnificent match-winning 84 against New Zealand in the first T20I at the VCA Stadium here on Wednesday.

“We had a plan from Day One that we wanted to play this kind of cricket, and that’s what we are following,” Abhishek said after receiving the Player of the Match award.

On his six-hitting, Abhishek explained the importance of practice and timing, helping him to be consistent at it. “One thing I’ve figured out is that if you want to hit the ball cleanly all the time, if you want to strike at 200 or something, you have to be carrying that intent and practise a lot for it. All the teams have a plan for me, and it’s not just about fielding; it’s about pitching [the ball] and the bowling too. So it’s about a  week’s preparation I’ve been doing before games. I usually get two-three days, or maybe a week and I know I’m going to be challenged by these bowlers. I back my instincts. I’ve been practising for a long time.”

Asked if his strategy was high-risk, Abhishek said, “I don’t feel it’s high risk. This is the way I’ve always wanted to play.”
