The sun’s strong rays can damage the skin, causing sunburn, redness and irritation. Because children’s skin is thinner and more delicate than that of adults, they are even more susceptible to sun damage. Whether they enjoy playing outside, visit a park, or take swimming lessons, their skin is exposed to harmful UVA and UVB rays. That’s why sun protection becomes important for your little ones too. But is sunscreen safe for children?
As a parent, choosing the right sunscreen for your child can seem confusing and cumbersome.
According to the Indian Academy of Pediatrics guidelines for pediatric skin care, “Sunscreens for use in children:
- Ideally, provide broad spectrum (ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B) coverage
- provide good photo stability
- no skin irritation
- Place physical or inorganic filters such as zinc oxide or titanium oxide
Liquids, sprays and alcohol-based gel formulations are likely to cause irritation and hence should be avoided in children below 12 years of age.
At what age can a child use sunscreen?
A sun protection factor (SPF) of more than 15 is recommended for infants above 6 months of age. For infants under 6 months of age, appropriate clothing and hats are recommended instead of the use of sunscreen.
Dr Rupam M Gangurde, dermatologist at Nashik-based Skinasia Skin Clinic, tells HT Shop Now, “Sunburn and tan are signs of skin damage caused by UV radiation. Many cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are caused by not protecting the skin from the sun during childhood and adolescence.
Children are at risk of excessive sun exposure not only at the pool, beach or on vacation, but also during daily outdoor activities. “Children’s skin is sensitive, so it needs regular protection from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays,” he says.
Tips for choosing sunscreen for children
Parents should keep the following factors in mind before buying sunscreen for kids
Broad-spectrum protection: Choose a sunscreen labeled “broad-spectrum.” This means that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
Sun Protection Factor (SPF): SPF only indicates protection against UVB, so focus on the broad spectrum first. For daily outdoor play, a minimum SPF 30 is recommended.
water resistance: Look for a water-resistant formula if your baby is swimming or sweating.
Note that water resistance is usually specified for 40 minutes or 80 minutes, so choose depending on the length of activity. Even water-resistant sunscreens need to be reapplied after swimming or towel-drying.
Physical (Mineral) vs Chemical Filters: There are two main types of active ingredients:
physical (mineral) sunscreen
Use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.
Sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays.
These are more gentle for sensitive skin and less likely to cause irritation.
Start protection right after application.

Use ingredients like avobenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene etc.
Absorb into the skin and convert UV energy into heat.
Usually lighter in texture and wears out more easily.
Application is required approximately 15-20 minutes before exposure to sunlight.
Gentle, hypoallergenic formula
Children’s skin is delicate. Look for sunscreens that are fragrance-free, dye-free, hypoallergenic, and suitable for sensitive skin.
Ease of Application: Children are more likely to cooperate if sunscreen is easy to apply.
It is often easier to spread creams and lotions thoroughly. Sprays may be convenient for playful children, but you should spray into your hands first and then rub in to ensure even coverage and avoid inhalation. Stick sunscreens are useful for the face, ears, and areas around the eyes, especially for young children.

Use about one ounce (enough to fill a shot glass) to cover a child’s entire body.
For the face alone, a nickel-sized amount is a good guideline.
