Abhishek Sharma’s run rampage continued as he stormed to the top of the T20I scoring charts, becoming the fastest batter to reach 1000 runs during the fifth India-Australia match at the Gabba on Saturday. The left-handed opener achieved the milestone in just 528 deliveries, surpassing Suryakumar Yadav’s previous record of 573 balls. England’s Phil Salt (599), Australia’s Glenn Maxwell (604), and the duo of Andre Russell and Finn Allen (609 each) complete the top five.
Abhishek’s fearless approach and blistering strike rate have redefined India’s T20 batting template, underlining his rise as one of the most dynamic batters in world cricket. His remarkable consistency was further evident as he became the second-fastest Indian to reach 1000 T20I runs in terms of innings, achieving the feat in just 28 innings, one behind Virat Kohli, who managed it in 27. He went past the likes of KL Rahul (29), Suryakumar Yadav (31), and Rohit Sharma (40), reaffirming his rapid ascent.
Opening the batting for India, Abhishek reached a landmark when he moved to 11 off 7 balls in his 29th innings since making his debut in July 2024. Recently, Tim David had briefly held the record for the fastest to 1000 T20I runs for a single country, completing the feat for Australia in 569 balls, four fewer than Suryakumar, before Abhishek’s latest record-breaking effort rendered both marks obsolete.
The 24-year-old Punjab batter currently leads the run charts in the ongoing series and was also India’s top scorer during their Asia Cup 2025 triumph in the UAE. Ranked No. 1 in the ICC T20I standings with 925 rating points, Abhishek continues to dominate the format. Since his debut, no player has scored more runs at a higher strike rate than his astonishing 189-plus, and his 64 sixes are the most by any batter from a Full-Member nation in the same period.
