The two semi-finals in women’s singles competition begin today at 2 PM IST. The day starts with Aryna Sabalenka taking on Elina Svitolina, in what is set to be a politically charged game.
Sabalenka, who hails from Belarus recently hit out against a Ukrainian tennis player Oleksandra Oliynykova, who had called for suspension of the Belarusian player.
Sabalenka had responded to her critics, by saying that she was pro peace.
“I respect that everyone is allowed to have their opinion and use their platforms,” Sabalenka said.
“I’ve been clear before that I’m pro-peace. Nothing has changed. That’s all I can say about that.”
