  • Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting president Tariq Rahman is set to return to politics after exile, with the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia set to land in Dhaka on Thursday. This will be Rahman’s first homecoming to Bangladesh in nearly 17 years. He has been living in London since 2008 following multiple criminal convictions in his home country, including on charges of money laundering and an alleged plot to assassinate now-ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
  • The murder of a Hindu man – Dipu Chandra Das – in Mymensingh led to protests near Bangladesh missions in India and further strained relations between the two. Both countries have summoned each other’s envoys amid security concerns at the high commissions in Bangladesh and India. Large numbers of people turned out in at least seven Indian cities to protest the killing. These include New Delhi, Kolkata, Bhopal, Jammu, Agartala, Mumbai and Hyderabad.

  • The assassination of youth leader Hadi sparked unrest in Bangladesh last week, during which the offices of major Bangladeshi media, the Daily Star and Prothom Alo, were set on fire, and journalists were trapped inside for long periods. The murder case of the student leader in Bangladesh will be heard under the Speedy Trial Tribunal amid demands for speedy justice by the student leader’s supporters in Bangladesh, the Daily Star reported on Tuesday.
  • The BJP on Wednesday criticized the Kolkata Police for its action against people protesting against attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, calling it the “ultimate appeasement” politics of the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal. The saffron party also hit out at the Congress and other opposition parties, alleging that their silence on the issue reflects their “tacit support” towards the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh. A day before this, hundreds of supporters of a pro-Hindutva organization tried to march to the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata on Tuesday and clashed with the police when they were stopped.
