Brian Lara deserves to keep the record: Wiaan Mulder on declaring before 400

South Africa all-rounder Wiaan Mulder revealed that he didn’t go after Brian Lara’s record of the highest individual score in Tests out of respect for the legendary batter. Mulder came mighty close to breaking Lara’s record during Day 2 of the second Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo.

The stand-in South Africa captain was unbeaten on 367* at lunch on Day 2 and had a great chance to etch his name in the history books by registering the highest individual score in Tests. However, Mulder shockingly decided to declare the innings on 626/5, denying himself the world record.

He revealed the reasoning behind his decision at the end of the day’s play and revealed that he let go of the opportunity out of respect for Lara and the player of that stature deserves to keep the record with him. He further went on to say that he would do exactly the same, if he gets another opportunity to break the record.

Zimbabwe vs South Africa 2nd Test Day 2 Highlights

“Firstly, I thought we had enough and we needed to bowl. Secondly, Brian Lara is a legend. For someone of that stature to keep that record is deserved. If I get the chance to do it again, I’d do it exactly the same way. I spoke to Shuks (Shukri Conrad) and he felt the same way. Brian Lara is a legend and he deserves to keep that record,” said Mulder after the end of the day’s play.
