BWF World Championships 2025: PV Sindhu falls short of historic sixth medal as resurgent run ends in quarters

It was not meant to be for PV Sindhu in Paris. The two-time Olympic medalist fell agonisingly short of her sixth World Championships medal when she went down fighting in the quarterfinal against higher-ranked Putri Wardani on Friday, August 29. Sindhu fought back from behind and forced a decider in a pulsating match at the Adidas Arena, but the 23-year-old Putri outlasted the Indian legend, who was bidding to gift her nation on National Sports Day.

PV Sindhu was chasing history in Paris. A year after she failed to medal at the Olympic Games for the first time in her career, Sindhu was telling the world that she is far from done with a vintage performance in the same city. After stunning World No. 2 Wang Zhi Yi of China on Thursday, Sindhu gave it her all in the quarters, but it was not enough.

Sindhu lost to Putri 14-21, 21-13, 16-21 in an hour an eight minutes as she fell agonisingly short of becoming the first women’s singles shuttler to win six medals at the prestigious world meet.

More to follow.
