For the longest time, house cleaning followed a certain rhythm. Our house help used to come every morning, sweep and tidy things up before the day started. It worked, but not without its little issues. Some days the timing didn’t match my work calls, sometimes the cleaning felt rushed, and some days, it didn’t happen at all.
Over time, I realized how dependent I had become on that routine. So when I got the chance to try out the Dream D20 Ultra robot vacuum cleaner, the idea wasn’t to completely replace HouseHelp, but to see how much of the daily cleaning it could realistically take on.
With claims like 13,000Pa suction, self-cleaning mop and up to 100 days of hands-free use, it looked impressive on paper. But the real question was simple – does it really make life easier in a regular home setup?
My home arrangements and expectations
I live in a standard 2BHK apartment with tiled floors, which tends to accumulate dust quickly, especially due to the air quality of Delhi NCR. Even if you clean in the morning, a layer is visible by evening. Corners and under furniture are usually areas that are overlooked unless one makes an extra effort.
Going into it, my expectations were pretty basic. I didn’t expect it to deep clean like a person, but I did want it to handle daily dust, hair, and light dirt without requiring constant supervision.
I was unsure about how well it would deal with corners, whether it would get stuck around furniture, and whether it would take more time managing the robot than it would actually save me time.

First Impressions: Unboxing and what was in the box
Setting up the vacuum was easy and a bit of fun (more on that below).
The unboxing itself seemed exciting, but not complicated. There aren’t a lot of parts to figure out, which is a relief. The mop pads come pre-assembled, so you don’t really need to assemble anything big. Inside the box, you get the robot vacuum, the base station, a side brush, a mop pad holder, pre-installed mop pads, a dust bag, a base station ramp extension plate, and the usual user manual.
All I had to do was install the ramp extension plate for the base station, plug everything in, and turn it on. that’s about it.

The next step is to connect it through the DreamHome app. The app seems functional and fairly simple, especially if you’re familiar with basic cleaning terms. Features like zone cleaning, scheduling, and different modes take a little time to understand, and can be overwhelming for first-time users. After the initial setup, it becomes a simple tap-and-go experience.
Now comes the fun part. As soon as I turned it on, it started mapping the house automatically. It moved around slowly, scanning each room, figuring out the layout. It was strangely amusing to watch it do this. It stops around the chair legs, reconsiders its path to the stars, and sometimes takes a second to decide where to go next.
There were moments when it struggled a bit, especially when trying to find its way back to the docking station. It was surprisingly fun to watch this small, round device “figure things out” on its own.
First few days without household help
For the first few days, I decided to rely solely on the robot vacuum for cleaning floors. No broom, no hand mop, just to see how it performs in a real setup.
I usually schedule it in the morning. It starts cleaning on its own, and you don’t really have to think about it after that. Surprisingly, the noise level is mostly only noticeable when you set it to the highest suction. In “Quiet” or “Standard” mode you cannot be interrupted by sound.
It was impressive to watch it move around furniture with the 3DAdapt obstacle avoidance feature. It handles open areas very well, although it does sometimes get stuck around dining chairs or in tight spaces, but since it is a machine, that’s a given. There were a few instances where it got stuck on cables or struggled near the edge of the rug.
That said, the convenience of just pressing a button (or scheduling it) started to feel real. I didn’t have to think about cleaning, it was just happening in the background. Moreover, you do not even need to be present at home. If the switch is on, you can operate it from any location.
One thing I noticed is how organized it is. It doesn’t rush, it covers areas in a planned pattern, which actually makes cleaning more consistent than manual cleaning on busy days.
Dreame D20 Ultra: Cleaning performance in real life
For daily dusting, it works really well. Living in Delhi, there is always a fine layer of dust on the floor, even if you clean it in the morning. I noticed this most when I walked barefoot in the evening, normally it felt a little gritty, but on days when the vacuum had already done a full cycle, the floors felt noticeably clean. It’s not something you notice right away, but you feel the difference.
There was one day when I ran it right after opening the windows in the morning, and by noon, the floor still felt relatively clean. That consistency is something that can sometimes be missed in manual cleaning on busy days.
However, the corners and edges are where you start to see limitations. It goes close to the walls, but not as deep as a broom. I noticed it near the corners of my bedroom and around the TV unit, if you look closely after a few days, there is still a little dust stuck to it. It’s not very visible from a distance, but it’s there.
With hair, especially long hair, performance is good but not perfect. Most of it is picked up during the main cleaning cycle, but I did find a few threads left near the corners or under the bed. On one occasion, a small clump of hair near the dressing table was not picked up on the first pass, but cleared up in the next scheduled time.
In the kitchen, it handled dry crumbs and everyday mess quite well. Things like biscuit crumbs, small food particles or flour dust were easily cleaned up. In fact, any sticky thing, like a drop of tea or a small spill, gets cleaned properly. It may not be clean in one go, but it will be absolutely clean in the second or third time.
The mopping function is helpful, but more useful from a maintenance standpoint. This keeps the floors fresh and reduces the slightly dull look you get after a day or two. I tried running it after a light spill in the kitchen, and although it cleaned the area, it wasn’t as good as wiping manually.
Overall, the experience feels like a system that maintains daily cleaning, not a system that completely replaces deep cleaning. You may want to clean manually once a week, but I found regular cleaning to be a relief.
What really changed my routine
The biggest change I noticed after a few days was mental. Now I don’t have to plan cleaning around my schedule.
In the past, mornings were a bit rushed, coordinating times to ensure the house was accessible for cleaning. With a robot vacuum, I can just schedule it and forget about it.
This also helped in maintaining continuity. Even on days when you feel lazy or busy, cleaning still gets done. That said, I haven’t completely stopped feeling the need to deep clean. For example, once in a few days, I still feel like mopping properly or cleaning the corners manually.

The DreamHome app is where a lot of the features really come from. Once you become familiar with it, you realize you don’t have to manage much manually.
You can customize cleaning based on the setup of your home, whether it’s floor type, specific rooms, or carpeted and mated areas. The vacuum automatically adjusts its cleaning method depending on the surface, making it feel a little more intuitive in daily use.
There’s also flexibility in how you want to clean. You can run a cleaning cycle throughout the house, select just one room, or even target a small area if there’s dirt or grime in one spot. This came in handy many times when I didn’t want to run the full cycle but just wanted to clean the kitchen after cooking.
You also get control over the cleaning intensity, basic, standard or maximum, depending on how dirty the floor is. On most days, the standard mode works fine, but the power boost option is useful.
Another thing I liked is the ability to choose between vacuuming, mopping, or both. By default, it runs a combined cleaning cycle, but you can easily change this in the app depending on your needs.
From actual use, some features emerged
- The app controls and scheduling are really useful. Being able to run it when you leave or set a certain time feels intuitive.
- The auto-docking and self-cleaning feature is another plus. You do not have to empty it after every use, which increases convenience.
- Navigation is mostly reliable, though not perfect. It learns the layout of the house over time, but occasional hiccups are part of the experience.
As far as features that seem less important, some advanced app controls and customization are nice, but not something you’ll use daily.
Can Dream D20 Ultra replace your househelp? honest answer
Short answer: not completely.
It can handle a large portion of daily cleaning, especially dust and light dirt. But for deep cleaning, corners and occasional detail work, manual effort is still required.
Where it really helps is in reducing dependencies. Instead of requiring daily assistance, you can manage with less frequent cleaning assistance.
It is more of a support system than a replacement.
Who should buy the Dreame D20 Ultra Robotic Vacuum Cleaner?
If you have a busy schedule, live in a small to medium-sized home, or simply want to reduce daily cleaning effort, this makes sense.
It is especially useful for those who want frequent cleaning without wasting daily time.
However, if you expect it to completely take over all the cleaning tasks, you may be disappointed. It works best as a maintenance tool, not a complete replacement.
Using the Dreame D20 Ultra for a few days didn’t completely change my cleaning routine at home, but it did change the routine.
This made daily cleaning more consistent, less dependent, and easier to manage. Also, it’s made clear that some level of manual cleaning is still required.
In a practical sense, it didn’t completely replace home help, but it did reduce how much I rely on it. And for many homes, this may be a worthwhile upgrade in itself.
