Clasico chaos

Tensions came to a head at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, following Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Barcelona in a high-octane La Liga encounter. In the centre of it all was Barcelona’s teenage phenom Lamine Yamal.

The 18-year-old winger had been indulging in mind games prior to the season’s first El Clasico, particularly  incensing the Los Blancos and their supporters over comments suggesting Madrid “steal” and “complain” with respect to refereeing decisions, which ultimately end up going in their favour.

Thus, in a fixture that scarcely needs a spark to ignite it, Yamal had already started a fire and soon after the referee blew his final whistle, Yamal began to feel the flames.

It all kicked off with Yamal offering a handshake to Madrid skipper Dani Carvajal, who rebuffed him and called the former out for his pre-game remarks. Carvajal was also heard telling the Barcelona winger, “You talk too much.”

After Carvajal, it was Madrid custodian Thibaut Courtois’s chance to confront Yamal, with Vinicius Jr then joining in. The latter was already fuming after being substituted 18 minutes before full-time when Yamal was allegedly heard to have told Vinicius to continue the fight in the locker room.

The Brazilian then jetted   towards the tunnel before being restrained by teammates and staff, while both sets of players then converged and began shoving and hurling insults at each other. The situation got so heated that police officers were forced to intervene. After the brawl was brought under control, Barcelona players headed down the tunnel while Madrid players gathered in a huddle to celebrate their first El Clasico win in five matches.

Nevertheless, Madrid’s players continued to throw shade at their Catalan counterparts via social media. Jude Bellingham, who scored the second goal and set up Kylian Mbappe’s opener, captioned a post of his goal celebration by saying: “Talk is cheap.” Similarly, Eduardo Camavinga’s post stated: “Enjoy your Sunday, Madridistas,” while Carvajal’s post read: “El Clasico is ours.”
