'Dune 3' and 'Doomsday' moving ahead with clash

'Dune: Part Three' and 'Avengers: Doomsday' moving ahead with December box office CLASH; films aim to beat 'Avengers: Endgame' USD 402 million record

‘Dune: Part Three’ on Tuesday, launched its highly anticipated trailer, giving fans a gritty look at all that is set to unfold on the big screens as the series comes an ‘epic conclusion’. Starring Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya in the lead roles, the film had social media buzzing about its release on December 18. However, the release date confirmation has only seemed to cause worry for cinema operators and distributors as the film is now set to lock horns with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, thus setting up a major box office showdown. While the clash has sparked excitement among fans, it has also raised concern, reports Variety. As per the report, the simultaneous release of two major films offers a rare boost for theatres; however, the industry observers question the strategy of concentrating such significant box office potential into a single weekend. At the same time, this has also raised speculation that one of the films could ultimately shift its release date. While ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is expected to attract a broader audience ranging from children to adults, ‘Dune: Part Three’ is expected to cater to a much smaller male-dominated audience. Meanwhile, trade experts note that ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ catered to distinctly different audiences.Nicknamed ‘Dunesday’ by fans and Robert Downey Jr, the clash is also notable for its sheer star power. ‘Dune: Part Three’ features an ensemble cast including Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and Rebecca Ferguson.‘Avengers: Doomsday’, on the other hand, brings together a wide-ranging roster of Marvel and X-Men characters, including Robert Downey Jr. returning in a new role as Doctor Doom, alongside Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Patrick Stewart, Pedro Pascal, Ian McKellen, Letitia Wright and Channing Tatum.Although ‘Dune 3’ blocked the pre-Christmas release slot first, ‘Doomsday’, which was previously slated for a May 2025 release before its delay, is expected to emerge as the year’s highest-grossing film.As far as its effect on the box office is concerned, the ‘Dune 3’ and ‘Doomsday’ clash is expected to set a new opening weekend record at the box office. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has long held the record for its USD 402 million debut while 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ scored an impressive USD 314 million and 2015’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ earned USD 313 million collectively.
