France qualify for 2026 World Cup with 4-0 win over Ukraine in respectful remembrance

France secured their place at the 2026 World Cup with a commanding 4-0 victory over Ukraine, rounding off their qualification campaign in clinical fashion. Despite the convincing win, the squad and staff refrained from celebrating, choosing instead to mark the 10th anniversary of the November 13, 2015 attacks in France with reflection and respect.

The match saw Kylian Mbappe lead from the front, scoring twice and showing a sharp attacking presence. However, the French captain said that the night was all about remembering the people who lost their lives in the attack.

“Very proud to be there, even if it wasn’t the most important thing of the evening — the most important part was the commemoration,” said Mbappe.

Mbappe’s contributions were matched by Ekitike, who found the net after coming off the bench. Akliouche’s introduction also provided new energy, helping to maintain attacking momentum late in the match. Ukraine made things difficult in the first half by defending deep and maintaining a low block.

“Always appreciate the good moments, even if it seems logical and natural for the France team to qualify. The objective was to qualify here tonight in a heavy, weighty context. The first half was difficult against a low block,” said Deschamps.

“I enjoy it, even if it’s not the first time — the France team has to be there at every major tournament.”

After halftime, France found better rhythm and increased their tempo, eventually capitalising on Ukraine’s defensive fatigue. Crisp passing and improved movement allowed French attackers to break clear and convert their opportunities. Deschamps made tactical substitutions, which contributed to the side’s improved performance in the final third.

Deschamps addressed the team’s initial struggles, reflecting,

“We didn’t put enough speed into our passing or our movement. Too many drops, not enough forward play,” he said.

“The changes helped — Maghnes Akliouche and Ekitike brought freshness and impact. We’ve played many matches like this, where patience is needed.”

Deschamps closed by noting the special circumstances surrounding the match and said it was going to be a subdued evening.

“Given the context, there was no place for wild celebrations,” he said. “We did what we had to do.”
