Josh Hazlewood is likely to miss the rest of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after suffering a calf injury on Day 4 of the third Test against India. Cricket Australia confirmed that the scans revealed a strain in his right calf. The senior fast bowler bowled only one over on Tuesday at the Gabba, Brisbane after suffering the injury during training in the lead-up to the day’s play.

Australia’s decision to bring Josh Hazlewood back into the XI after he missed the second Test due to a side strain has backfired. Scott Boland played in Hazlewood’s absence in Australia’s 10-wicket win in the pink-ball Test. Hazlewood recovered in time for the third Test, but suffered a fresh injury.

“He is likely to miss the remainder of the Test series. A squad replacement will be made in due course,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson said.

AUS vs IND, 3rd Test Day 4 Updates

Hazlewood limped off the field after his only over on Day 4 of the third Test. The pacer bowled five overs on Day 3, picking up the crucial wicket of Virat Kohli for just 3.

Hazlewood did not look in his best shape when he walked out to the field on Tuesday. He had a lengthy chat with captain Pat Cummins and vice-captain Steve Smith before walking off the field.

Without Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc did the bulk of the bowling on another rain-affected day in the Brisbane Test. Mitchell Marsh, who has had his fair share of injury concerns in the past, bowled two overs without much success.

India were reeling at 74 for 5 when they lost captain Rohit Sharma in the first session. However, Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul stitched a 67-run stand to steer the team out of trouble.

Rahul missed out on a well-deserved hundred as he was dismissed for 84 by Nathan Lyon after a stunning catch from Steve Smith in the slip cordon. Jadeja, however, carried on and scored a crucial fifty, taking India closer to the mark needed to avoid follow-on — 245.
