Gavaskar highlights Jaiswal’s major technical concern: Someone needs to sit with him

Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar has highlighted a major concern with opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal after his another failure in the 5th Test against England at Kennington Oval, London. Jaiswal was dismissed for 2 (9) in the first session as he got trapped in front of the stumps by Gus Atkinson, who brought a delivery sharply back into him.

As a result, his search for a big score since the second Test in Edgbaston, continued. Following Jaiswal’s poor show, Gavaskar mentioned how the opening batter has been struggling with the ball coming back into him from around the wicket.

England vs India 5th Test Day 1 Updates

“There’s a bit of uncertainty and maybe a lack of confidence creeping into Jaiswal’s game. After scoring a hundred in the first Test, he hasn’t looked very fluent. That’s possibly why he’s not getting his front foot far enough forward to smother this return. But he’s a good player. I think if someone sits with him and works on a few technical aspects—like getting his front foot forward and not opening up his shoulder too much—it could help. Right now, his back shoulder is going towards first or second slip, which makes it hard for the bat to come down straight. If his shoulder stayed more towards the wicketkeeper and first slip, the bat would come down straighter,” said Gavaskar on Sony Sports.

Ahead of the series, Jaiswal was averaging 116 facing right-arm seamers from around the wicket with one dismissal. His average has now dropped down to 24.7 with seven dismissals in the ongoing series. Jaiswal started the series well, scoring 101 and 87 in the first two Tests, respectively.

However, since then, he’s been able to score just one half-century in the last five innings. In the series so far, the southpaw has accumulated 293 runs from nine innings at an average of 32.55 with one century and two fifties to his name.

Meanwhile, following his dismissal, KL Rahul also had a rare failure in the series as he got dismissed for 14. After the early blows, captain Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan took India to lunch on 72/2.
