Team India`s Test skipper Shubman Gill recently revealed the moment which made him realise that cricket was going to be his career.
The right-hander revealed that he attended a camp of under-23 Indian pace bowlers and registered a score of 90 runs by facing bowlers who were probably double his age.
While speaking on Apple Mesic`s official YouTube channel, Gill said one of his close friends, Khushpreet, had asked his coach if the 11-year-old Gill could play for their team.
“Honestly, I realised this is going to be my career when I was 11. Like, a moment happened. There was a camp going on of under-23 Indian fast bowlers, and I was only 11. So they were more than double my age, most of the players there, and they were a batsman short. One of my really good friends, one of my closest friends who I practised with, Khushpreet, was in that camp. He was a fast bowler, and he asked the head coach if he could get me because we were a batsman short and we were playing a match,” said the Fazilka-born cricket player.
The right-handed batsman then revealed that despite losing quick wickets in the match, he managed to put on a score of an unbeaten 90 runs next to his name.
“And then I was batting way down the order, like at number seven or eight. Our first four or five batsmen got out within four or five overs, and then I went in to bat and scored 90-something not out. That moment and that innings, like, it was just a practice match, nothing, but the confidence that moment gave me is what made me realise, okay, this is… this is like, I am meant to do this,” said Gill.
Over the years, Shubman Gill has emerged as one of the most consistent batsmen for Team India across all formats of the game. He also led a young Indian team to a 2-2 draw in the five-match Test series against England.
He is the potential option to become India`s future captain in all formats and has also gained the experience of leading the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
