India has secured the hosting rights for the 2029 World Police & Fire Games (WPFG), which will feature over 10,000 athletes and be held across three cities in Gujarat`s Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Ekta Nagar (Kevadia). The athletes will represent police, fire, customs and correctional services departments from over 70 countries.

“India now joins a prestigious group of past host nations including Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, China, and the United States, affirming its arrival as a central player in the global multi-sport ecosystem,” a release from the state government said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday expressed happiness over India being designated as the host country, terming it as a moment of great pride for every citizen.

“It is a moment of great pride for every citizen, as Bharat has been designated as the host country for the prestigious 2029 World Police and Fire Games. Bharat winning the prestigious bid to host the event is a global recognition of our sprawling sports infrastructure built under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi Ji,” Shah wrote on `X`.

India will thus become the first south Asian country to host the WPFG games since its inception in 1985.

The announcement came after India`s final representation to the California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF), which is the governing body of WPFG, last Sunday in Birmingham.

“India has won the bid to host the 2029 World Police & Fire Games (WPFG) in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar & Ekta Nagar, following a comprehensive bid presentation to the WPFG Federation in Birmingham, USA,” Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel wrote on X.

“This global victory reflects the visionary leadership of Hon`ble PM Shri Narendra Modi and Hon`ble Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, and is a big step towards making Ahmedabad the sporting capital of India,” he added.

Gujarat Minister of State for Sports Harsh Sanghavi also welcomed the development and said, “Gujarat is ready to make its mark on the world sports map! Let`s get ready to host the world!”

India, meanwhile, is also bidding to organise the Olympic Games for the first time in 2036, with Ahmedabad likely to be the main host city.
