India great Rohan Bopanna announces retirement from professional tennis

Indian tennis legend Rohan Bopanna has announced his retirement from professional tennis, marking the end of a glittering career that spanned more than two decades and left an indelible mark on Indian sport. His final appearance came at the Paris Masters 1000, where he partnered Alexander Bublik, closing the curtain on a journey that began in the coffee hills of Coorg and reached the grandest stages of world tennis.

In an emotional note shared on Instagram, Bopanna wrote: “How do you bid farewell to something that gave your life its meaning? After 20 unforgettable years on tour, it’s time I’m officially hanging up my racquet. From chopping wood in Coorg to strengthen my serve, to standing under the lights of the biggest arenas in the world – it feels surreal. Representing India has been the greatest honour of my life.”

Over the years, Bopanna became a cornerstone of Indian tennis, excelling in doubles and mixed doubles with his big serve, fearless net play, and longevity that defied age. A 2017 French Open mixed doubles champion, Bopanna also won multiple ATP titles and represented India with distinction in Davis Cup ties and Olympic Games. His late-career resurgence – highlighted by a 2024 Australian Open men’s doubles triumph and a return to the World No. 1 doubles ranking at the age of 43 – made him a symbol of perseverance and passion.

– Ends
