IPL 2026: Shreyas Iyer fined Rs 24 lakh for 2nd over rate offence. Is he facing ban?

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined Rs 24 lakh after his side were found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This was PBKS’ second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct.

Under Article 2.22, the penalty did not stop with the captain. The rest of the Playing XI, including Impact Player Priyansh Arya, were also hit with fines of Rs 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their match fees, whichever is lesser, adding to a costly outing off the field despite the dominant win.

Despite the off-field setback, PBKS delivered a commanding performance on the field, comfortably chasing down a 210-run target against CSK. It was a result that highlighted both their batting depth and attacking approach, even as the slow over-rate ruling slightly dampened the aftermath of an otherwise dominant night.

WILL SHREYAS IYER FACE A BAN?

Despite this being Punjab’s second slow over-rate offence of the season, Iyer will not face a suspension even if the team commits another breach in the upcoming matches. That is largely due to a key rule change introduced by the IPL ahead of the 2025 season.

The tournament has done away with the earlier provision of a one-match ban for captains after three over-rate offences in a season. Instead, penalties are now limited to fines and in-game field restrictions, reducing the immediate risk of suspension for repeat offences.

However, a broader system is now in place. The IPL has aligned its Code of Conduct with the ICC by introducing demerit points. Any sanction imposed by the match referee leads to points being added to a player or official’s record, which remain valid for 36 months. Accumulation of these points over time can still result in suspensions, making discipline a longer-term concern rather than an immediate one.

HOW PBKS THRASHED CSK AT HOME

While PBKS’s bowling will take some lessons to build on going forward, their batting left little to complain about. The chase of 210 was made to look far simpler than it should have been, thanks to a fearless approach from the very start.

Priyansh Arya set the tone with a blistering 39 off just 11 balls, immediately putting CSK under pressure and ensuring the required rate never spiralled out of control.

From there, Iyer took charge of proceedings, anchoring the innings with a composed half-century. His knock, combined with the aggressive intent shown throughout the lineup, meant PBKS were always ahead of the game.

CSK’s bowlers struggled to respond despite early assistance from the surface. The inability to contain runs or build pressure allowed PBKS to cruise to the target in just 18.4 overs, extending CSK’s worrying run at home and underlining Punjab’s growing batting firepower.
