Jaya Bachchan on marrying Amitabh Bachchan
Speaking with Barkha Dutt at the We The Women event, Jaya Bachchan opened up about Amitabh, saying, “The best thing I like about him is his discipline. I am a big one for discipline. I am a very strict mother.” She further added, “He does not speak. He is not free with his opinion like I am. He keeps it to himself, but he knows how to convey what he wants to at the right time, in the right way… which I don’t! That’s the difference. He is a different personality; maybe that’s why I married him!”
She jokingly added, “Can you imagine if I had married somebody like me? He would be in Vrindavan and I would be somewhere else!” Further, Jaya compared marriage to `Delhi ka laddoo` and added that the legality of a marriage does not have to define a relationship. “Woh Delhi ka laddoo he khao toh mushkil na khao toh bhi mushkil, either way its difficult. But just enjoy life!”
For those unversed, Amitabh and Jaya got married on June 3, 1973. They are parents to two children—Shweta and Abhishek Bachchan. The couple, who celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary this year, has appeared together in several iconic films such as Silsila, Zanjeer, Abhimaan, and Sholay.

The actress also shared that she believes marriage is an outdated institution and would prefer that her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda, not get married. During the chat, Jaya said, “I don`t want Navya to get married.” When asked if she thinks marriage is outdated, she replied, “Yes, absolutely. I am a grandmother now. Navya turns 28 in a few days. I am too old to advise young girls on how to bring up children. Things have changed so much, and today little children are so smart, they will outsmart you.”
At the same event, she garnered attention for her unfiltered comments on paparazzi culture, criticizing their dressing, education, and behaviour.
