KKR vs PBKS, IPL 2026: Rain washes away Ajinkya Rahane’s cloudy toss blunder in Kolkata

Brief Score: Kolkata Knight Riders (25 for 2 in 3.4 overs) vs Punjab Kings. Match abandoned due to rain in Kolkata on Monday. SCORECARD | HIGHLIGHTS |

Fortune may favour the brave, but on this occasion it seemed to side with the baffling. When Ajinkya Rahane walked out for the toss under a bruised Kolkata sky and chose to bat first, he appeared to disregard both the weather forecast and common sense, leaning instead on statistics. As it turned out, he and Kolkata Knight Riders were spared the consequences of that call, as rain forced a washout of the IPL 2026 fixture at Eden Gardens on Monday. The inevitable no-result handed KKR a crucial, gift-wrapped point – much needed for a side desperate to halt the slide after two successive defeats.

Punjab, meanwhile, moved to the top of the table with two wins and a point secured in Kolkata.

Rahane’s decision raised eyebrows immediately. With rain having lashed the city on the eve of the match and the pitch kept under covers in the lead-up to this weekday encounter, conditions clearly pointed towards bowling first. Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer, unsurprisingly, looked delighted at the toss. While it was true that three of the last six IPL matches at the venue had been won by teams batting first, those numbers felt irrelevant under looming dark clouds. Most captains heed the conditions; Rahane and the KKR think tank chose not to.

Punjab Kings wasted no time in making them pay. Their seamers tore through the KKR top order, reducing them to a precarious 25 for 2 inside four overs. With the ball zipping through the heavy, humid air, Rahane’s decision quickly began to resemble a self-inflicted wound.

Arshdeep Singh set the tone early, probing relentlessly and drawing uneasy inside edges from both Finn Allen and Rahane. But it was Australia’s Xavier Bartlett who delivered the early blows with a masterclass in outswing bowling. Exploiting the conditions beautifully, he removed Allen – tempted into a drive that feathered through to the wicketkeeper – and then Cameron Green, who, already under scrutiny, fell pushing at a length delivery that shaped away just enough to take the edge.

At that stage, KKR looked in serious trouble, their top order exposed and momentum firmly with Punjab. Yet, just as the Eden Gardens crowd braced for a long evening, the heavens intervened with impeccable timing. A relentless downpour swept across the ground, halting play and washing away Punjab’s advantage as effectively as it did the match itself. What had been shaping up as a tactical misstep of significant consequence was suddenly reduced to a damp squib.

The players were forced off with KKR struggling at 25 for 2 in 3.4 overs. Rahane and the young Angkrish Raghuvanshi left to weather the storm – both literal and figurative – against Arshdeep and Bartlett. They never got the chance. Persistent rain, accompanied by strong gusts of wind, ensured there would be no resumption.

The rain eased at around 10:30 pm IST, but officials were unwilling to take the risk of restarting play in damp, skiddy conditions at this early stage of the IPL 2026 season. The match was eventually called off at 11 pm IST.

EXPERTS BAFFLED BY RAHANE CALL

Former India spinner R Ashwin, meanwhile, did not mince his words, offering a sharp assessment of what he saw as a glaring tactical error at the toss.

“When you know it’s going to be a rain-affected game, with an inexperienced bowling attack at your disposal, you choose to bat first. Interesting thought process,” he said on X.

Former KKR wicketkeeper Shreevats Goswami also chimed in.

“Very surprised to see Rahane winning the toss & electing to bat first in an overcast condition. A bit of a shocker there. Immediately you can see swing and 2 caught behind. Very, very brave call,” he said.

CAMERON GREEN UNDER PRESSURE

With victory eluding them in their first three matches, questions are beginning to swirl around the Kolkata Knight Riders’ leadership group. More notably, all-rounder Cameron Green has come under increasing scrutiny.

Bought for Rs 25.2 crore, Green has not been able to contribute with the ball for KKR due to workload restrictions imposed by Cricket Australia – something that has left captain Ajinkya Rahane less than pleased.

Reduced to a one-dimensional role, Green has struggled to make an impact with the bat. Scores of 18, 2 and 4 underline a worrying lack of returns, and the Australian all-rounder is already running out of time to justify his price tag. If results do not improve in the coming weeks, he could quickly find himself under even greater pressure within the KKR setup.

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen questioned Green’s role in the side, suggesting he may not be suited to batting at No. 3 in a line-up already short on middle-order experience.

“I won’t talk about the money, but I don’t think he is good enough to bat at No. 3. And he’s not bowling,” Pietersen said.

KKR also looked unsettled on Monday, missing their spin twins. Varun Chakravarthy was ruled out through injury, while Sunil Narine was unavailable due to illness. In response, the Knight Riders handed a debut to senior pacer Navdeep Saini, hoping to exploit his height and extract assistance from the conditions on a cloudy evening.

With the rain-enforced break offering them time to regroup, KKR will be keen to rejig their line-up and reassess their strategy ahead of their clash against Lucknow Super Giants on Thursday.
