On most days, bus travel in Karnataka is all about getting from point A to point B. Drama is usually limited to window seats, tea breaks, and that one playlist that always hits at midnight. But every once in a while, a small change in policy quietly makes life easier for thousands of passengers. This time, it’s all about fares, comfort and a little extra room for your wallet.
The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation has announced fare relaxation on its major bus services, giving regular and long distance commuters a chance to smile before boarding the bus. From tomorrow (January 5, 2026), passengers can avail discounts ranging from 5 per cent to 15 per cent on select premium services on some of the most popular intercity and interstate routes from Bengaluru.
For anyone who regularly travels out of town for work, family visits, pilgrimages or weekend getaways, it’s not just a number on paper. This is a real reduction in travel costs on routes where there is heavy passenger movement every day.
This discount is applicable on KSRTC’s high-class fleet, which includes Rajhamsa, Non AC Sleeper, Airavat, Airavat Club Class, AC Sleeper and Multi Axle AC Sleeper services. These are the buses that most travelers choose when comfort is as important as punctuality.
Be it an overnight trip to the coast, a temple visit starting before dawn, or a late night return from a business meeting, these services have become the backbone of long distance bus travel from Bengaluru.
What rent reduction looks like in real money
KSRTC has not just announced the drop in percentage. It has put forward the actual figures and for passengers, this is where the story becomes interesting. Here’s how fares have changed on some major routes in Bengaluru with the new discounts.

Seen together, the numbers tell their own story. There is now a direct saving of Rs 500 per ticket on long night routes like Bengaluru to Mumbai and Shirdi. Reductions of between Rs 150 to Rs 300 are offered on popular weekend and pilgrimage routes like Pune, Murudeshwar and Udupi, while smaller intercity routes like Bengaluru to Davanagere also get modest but welcome discounts.
For travelers, this changes the mental math of booking. A sleeper berth that once felt like an extravagance suddenly seems reasonable. Air-conditioned seats on long interstate journeys no longer seem like a luxury add-on but a sensible option.
Why does this matter to everyday commuters?
What makes this move passenger-friendly is that it focuses on services that people actually rely on. These are not occasional festival specials or seasonal offers. These are everyday buses, running day and night, carrying students, professionals, families, pilgrims and tourists.
By increasing discounts in this segment, KSRTC is quietly acknowledging that premium travel should not always come with a premium price tag.
From utility point of view, time also works in favor of the traveller. January is the time when travel picks up again after the holiday lull.
Colleges have reopened, offices are back in full swing, and families start planning post-festival trips. With relaxations starting from January 5, passengers will get relief as demand increases.
Booking remains as easy as before. Passengers can check routes, services and concessional fares on the official website of KSRTC at ksrtc.in. Since the offer is applicable only on selected routes and services, it is advisable to check the fare details while booking. Savings are reflected automatically without any additional steps or paperwork.
At a time when the cost of travel across various modes is constantly rising, a cut in fares, even if modest, feels like a small but meaningful victory. It may not make headlines like a new highway or a bullet train proposal, but for a commuter standing at the bus terminal at midnight waiting for Airavata or Ambari to arrive, the relaxation makes sense. This means one less sigh at the ticket counter and one more reason to sit on the seat knowing that the journey has become a little easier on the pocket.
