Lizelle Lee has carved her name in the history books of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) by becoming the first player to score back-to-back centuries in the tournament. The South African cricketer’s explosive form was on full display during the Hobart Hurricanes’ clash against the Adelaide Strikers, where she struck a dazzling 57-ball hundred, leading her team to post an imposing 191 for 2 in their 20-over quota.
Just days after setting a WBBL record with a monumental 150 in her previous outing, Lee once again laid waste to the bowlers with 13 boundaries and four sixes. Her aggressive intent left the Adelaide Strikers scrambling as they struggled to contain her. Despite her innings being cut short by an unfortunate run-out, where the ball deflected off bowler Jemma Barsby’s hand, Lee’s impact was decisive. The highlight of Lee’s innings was a no-look six shot from Orla Prendergast’s delivery which went straight down the ground. Such was the power that her bat eventually broke after she hit the shot for a six.

Following Lee’s departure at 103 from 59 balls, Nicola Carey expertly guided the innings forward, remaining unbeaten on 64 from 46 balls. With Elyse Villani adding an unbeaten 23, the Hurricanes continued their assault, piling on 50 runs in the last five overs. This robust team effort ensured a challenging target for the Strikers and underscored Lee’s foundational role in setting a commanding score.
As Adelaide Strikers began their chase, India’s star batter Smriti Mandhana stepped up, showcasing her abilities with a quick-fire 50 off just 30 balls, solidifying her position as a key player in the Strikers’ response. Mandhana’s innings hinted at an engaging chase, putting pressure back on the Hurricanes despite their strong total.
Lizelle Lee’s historic accomplishment in the WBBL emphasises not only her skill but also her ability to perform under pressure. Her consecutive centuries have set a benchmark in the tournament, showcasing the depth of talent in women’s cricket. As the tournament progresses, Lee’s outstanding performances will be the ones to look forward to.
