Residents in parts of West Bengaluru should prepare for a long day without power on December 19, as BESCOM has planned a major power shutdown to upgrade infrastructure. The outage, which could last up to 12 hours in some areas, is part of the ongoing maintenance and transformer capacity enhancement works across the city since December 16.

According to BESCOM officials, the disruption in power supply is necessary to strengthen the network and prevent repeated breakdowns in future. While many areas of Bengaluru are facing short cuts between 10 am and 6 pm during this maintenance phase, the situation will be different in and around Byadarahalli on December 19, where a continuous shutdown has been planned.

Why will electricity be cut for 12 hours?

The extended outage is linked to transformer capacity expansion at the Byadarahalli power distribution centre. BESCOM is carrying out upgrade work in the area from December 14 to December 19, but a full shutdown will be required on December 19 to safely complete the final phase of work.

There is a possibility of power supply being closed on this day from 10 am to 10 pm. BESCOM officials say such a long outage is inevitable due to the scale of the upgrade and the safety requirements involved in handling high-capacity transformers.

Areas likely to be affected on December 19

Several residential neighbourhoods, layouts and industrial areas in West Bengaluru are expected to be affected by the 12-hour power cut. BESCOM has indicated that the following areas fall under the affected feeders:

Madeshwar Nagar

Prasanna Layout

Kempegowda Nagar

Golarhatti

Nadkerappa Industrial Area

Residents are advised to note that the actual impact may vary slightly depending on feeder lines and local distribution arrangements, and it is best to confirm with the nearest BESCOM offices for street-level clarity.

How will the outage affect daily life

For homes, a 12-hour power outage means advance planning will be vital. Areas dependent on electric borewells may face water supply problems, while apartments with lifts, security systems and common area lighting will need to rely on backup power where available.

Small businesses and workshops, especially in industrial areas like Sunkadakatte and Padmavati Industrial Area, may see disruption in work, especially if they lack generator support. The impact is likely to be felt more acutely at stores that use digital billing, refrigeration or manufacturing equipment.

Professionals working from home in the affected areas are also advised to plan alternative work arrangements, as broadband routers, mobile towers and charging access may be affected during the shutdown window.

BESCOM’s advice to consumers

BESCOM has urged residents to cooperate with the maintenance work, saying the upgrade is aimed at improving long-term power stability in West Bengaluru. Consumers have been advised to charge essential appliances in advance, stock up on drinking water where necessary and avoid switching on heavy appliances immediately after power is restored.

Officials also warned that the maintenance schedule may change slightly depending on ground conditions, and residents should stay alert for local updates.

What will come after December 19?

Once the work on increasing the transformer capacity is completed, BESCOM expects better load handling in the Byadarahalli area. This is likely to reduce frequent tripping and unscheduled cuts, especially during peak summer months when power demand increases rapidly.

At the moment, December 19 is an important date for residents of West Bengaluru to prepare for prolonged power cuts. BESCOM says the inconvenience is temporary, but infrastructure upgrades are necessary for more reliable power supply in the long run.
