Car fuel tank design: If you have ever driven different cars, you may have noticed that the fuel tank is not always on the same side. Some cars have it on the right, while others place it on the left. Many drivers wonder why there is no standard position. The answer lies in engineering design, safety planning, and global manufacturing practices.
The main reason behind the fuel filler position is vehicle design. Car manufacturers plan the placement of the fuel tank during the early stages of development. Engineers consider several factors, such as the exhaust system, suspension setup, underbody layout, and available space.
Modern cars are built on platforms that are shared across multiple models and even different countries. Once the fuel tank position is decided for a platform, it usually remains the same for all models based on that structure. Changing it would require redesigning important components, which would increase cost and complexity.

Safety and structural planning
Safety is another important factor. Engineers carefully choose the position of the fuel tank and filler pipe to reduce risks during a crash. The tank is usually placed away from major impact zones and heat sources such as the exhaust system.
In side-impact collisions, structural strength plays a key role. The placement of the filler pipe and tank must align with crash safety standards. This is why the decision is more about safety and engineering balance rather than driver preference.
Traffic rules in different countries also influence the design of cars. In countries like India, the UK, and Japan, vehicles drive on the left side of the road. In the United States and most of Europe, vehicles drive on the right. Some manufacturers consider refuelling convenience when selecting the filler side, but there is no universal rule.
Today, both right-side and left-side fuel tanks are common worldwide. Drivers can easily check the correct side by looking at the small arrow next to the fuel gauge symbol on the dashboard, which points to the side where the fuel cap is located.

Trust and security in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are fundamentally different frameworks that often produce contrasting design decisions, evaluation methods, and architectural choices.

Security primarily focuses on preventing direct harm from an AI system through internal technical controls and safeguards. It asks: Does the model make accurate predictions? Does it resist adversarial attacks? Are data and infrastructure secure from external threats? Security is largely an intrinsic property, which can be measured through controlled test environments and technical benchmarks.
In contrast, trust is a more inclusive concept that encompasses fairness, explainability, privacy, robustness, governance, and social impact across the board.
A system may be technically secure yet be highly unreliable, and conversely, internal security verification provides minimal assurance to external stakeholders.

This distinction matters because satisfying internal benchmarks and technical security standards is necessary but insufficient to build trust. Organizations can create systems that pass all security tests, achieve high accuracy on the data held and implement robust infrastructure, yet deploy tools that may systematically harm certain populations or make decisions that users cannot understand or verify.
The same dimensions of AI design – explainability, performance, fairness, privacy, and robustness – are understood and implemented completely differently depending on whether the overarching goal is security or trust.
1. Explainability (debugging vs understanding)
In the security paradigm, interpretability is primarily an engineering tool; Developers generate explanations for model predictions to debug failures, identify weak points in the decision boundary, and diagnose where the system breaks down.
Whereas, in the belief model, explanations serve a fundamentally different purpose. They enable end-users and domain experts to understand decisions in their own conceptual language and verify the logic against their expertise.
For example, a medical diagnostic model designed for security can explain itself to engineers through feature importance scores and attention maps.
The same model designed for confidence will explain to physicians using clinical language, highlighting which symptoms and test results contributed to the diagnosis that physicians can verify against their medical knowledge. These are not identical interpretations as they reflect different audiences and different purposes.
2. Performance and Benchmarks (Internal Testing vs. Verifiable Proof)
Security treats performance as something that is intrinsically valid. Does the model achieve 95% accuracy on the test set? Does it withstand adversarial attacks in a laboratory setting?
These are engineering questions answered through controlled benchmarking.
However, trust requires external validation and verifiable proof.
To make AI trustworthy, it demands third-party verification: independent auditors, preferably with access to proprietary models through privacy-preserving mechanisms such as trusted execution environments, that certify performance and bias characteristics.
The EU AI Act and the emerging regulatory framework clearly require this distinction.
3. Fairness and Bias (Discrimination vs. Equality)
Protection-oriented fairness focuses on preventing the system from explicitly using protected characteristics (race, gender, age) in decision making.
This leads to designs that exclude sensitive characteristics or enforce “fairness through anonymity” – the assumption that removing demographic data will prevent discriminatory outcomes.
This approach repeatedly fails because algorithms may detect proxy variables that encode protected characteristics – a gender-blind credit scoring system could discriminate against women if the model finds that certain phone types or app choices are related to female identity, even if gender is excluded from the input.
The algorithm’s optimization objective – predicting loan default – is agnostic to the developer’s intentions; If the training data contains historical gender bias, the model will find shortcuts to that pattern. Trust-oriented fairness addresses this by continuously auditing across demographic groups, testing for both direct and indirect discrimination, and confirming that performance generalizes equally.
4. Privacy (Data Security vs. User Control)
Security-oriented privacy emphasizes protecting data from unauthorized access: encryption, access controls, secure storage, and preventing data breaches. The focus is on privacy – ensuring that no one can access or misuse personal information.
Trust-oriented privacy centers on user agency and informed consent: Do users know what data is being collected and why? How is it used? Can they access, correct or delete their information? Do they have any meaningful choice about what is stored?
Privacy by design in the trust paradigm means minimizing data collection, obtaining explicit consent for each use, implementing transparent data-handling practices, and respecting user rights regardless of technical feasibility.
5. strength
Security-oriented robustness focuses on adversarial attacks. For example, a vision system robust against adversarial attacks can withstand small perturbations designed by attackers to lead to misclassification.
Confidence-oriented robustness asks whether the system generalizes reliably across real-world situations and diverse populations.
A diagnostic AI system may be trained robustly against adversarial examples, but it silently fails when deployed in a different hospital with different patient demographics, equipment, or clinical workflows.
Recent research clearly shows this difference: models adversarially trained to be robust against one type of perturbation (for example, specific image distortions) often become less robust against other, unexpected perturbations.
6. Ethics and Accountability
Security defines ethics as compliance: Does the system meet ethical guidelines? Have we done a risk assessment? Do we document bias mitigation strategies? These are important but mainly process-oriented.
Trust defines ethics as relational integrity: Is the system really fair to all the groups it affects? Do stakeholders feel that their values are respected? Is responsibility clear when the system causes harm? Does the governance reflect the interests of affected parties, not just developers?
This requires ongoing engagement with diverse stakeholders, monitoring of real-world impacts, and adapting governance as ethical issues arise.
Algorithms designed for hiring may claim ethical compliance by documenting bias-mitigation techniques and internal fairness audits.
It earns trust by demonstrating that hiring outcomes are consistent across demographics, that candidates understand how they are evaluated, that recruiters maintain meaningful human judgments, and that the company adjusts the system based on feedback about fairness concerns.
Designing AI for security focuses on preventing exploitation and system failure through rigorous internal testing, adversarial robustness and threat modeling, strong security controls (access management, encryption, monitoring), disciplined technical documentation of specifications and risks, and penetration testing.
On the other hand, designing for trust moves forward by ensuring that the system credibly meets stakeholders’ needs in context, which requires involving stakeholders throughout the lifecycle, building transparency into the process (auditability, model provenance and training-data documentation), providing friendly interpretation to multiple audiences (end-users, domain experts, regulators), externally validating performance through third-party review, maintaining meaningful human oversight rather than box-ticking, supporting diverse populations. And situations include monitoring real-world outcomes and maintaining governance. Feedback loops that adapt when there is evidence of ethical or performance issues.
investment required for trust
Obviously construction tools for trust often come with a price. Yet these investments are essential when trust matters – in health care, finance, criminal justice, hiring, lending and any area where AI decisions directly impact human well-being.
Current regulatory frameworks are increasingly recognizing this gap.
The EU AI Act classifies certain applications as “high risk” and calls for extensive documentation, external auditing and transparency for those systems because security alone is insufficient.
NIST’s AI risk management framework explicitly addresses multiple dimensions of reliability, not just security or accuracy.
Emerging standards, such as the ISO/IEC framework, are developing criteria for verifiable reliability based on objectivity, interpretability, and robustness.
As AI becomes increasingly involved in decision making that affects millions of people, the difference has become fundamental, not just academic. Organizations that recognize and invest in differences are more likely to create systems worthy of genuine trust.
Security is an essential foundation. There is no doubt about it. But trust is a broader social and relational asset. After all, no one wants to trust a system they know is insecure or unreliable.

Pakistan’s off-spinner Usman Tariq, 28, has played just four T20Is so far, but he has claimed 11 wickets thanks to his unique pause-and-release bowling action. Former national selector and ex-India left-arm spinner Venkatapathy Raju reckoned any new bowler brings in the element of surprise. “When something is new, it’ll always be a mystery. People take time because they use video analysis to watch everything and then approach things differently. Also, when you’re playing [against Tariq] for the first time, how much ever you’ve seen him before, while facing him, it will be totally different,” Raju told mid-day over the phone from Hyderabad.

We should give credit to somebody who’s doing this,” added Raju about Tariq, who claimed 3-27 when Pakistan beat USA in Colombo on Tuesday.
Former India left-arm spinner and ex-Mumbai captain Nilesh Kulkarni felt ICC should probe the bend in Tariq’s bowling arm. “The 15 degree bending of the arm, which is the ICC rule, can’t be judged with the naked eye, so it has to be scientifically verified. Otherwise, his bowling is legitimate and even the pause is allowed. Ashwin did it, as did Kedar Jadhav,” Kulkarni told mid-day on Thursday.
Interestingly, Kulkarni felt that Suryakumar Yadav & Co will not struggle against Tariq as most of them have come through tennis-ball cricket, where such tactics are common. “We [India] have an advantage as most of our batters come from a good tennis-ball cricket structure where these tactics are used a lot. The Indian batters must use this to their advantage and prepare well [for Tariq]. And if you prepare well, he won’t be a threat,” added Kulkarni.
Ex-national selector and leg-spinner Narendra Hirwani, 57, who played 17 Tests and 18 ODIs, however, felt Tariq will hold the edge initially. “When a bowler takes a pause, he gets that extra time to see any late movement or shuffle by the batter and can change his delivery at the last moment. So, Tariq will have that advantage. Also, he bowls with a stand-up action which means he has good power in his fingers and shoulders and can generate good speed,” Hirwani told mid-day over the phone from Indore.
The former leggie, however, believes every bowler will eventually get found out, if a batter observes closely. “If he [Tariq] is taking time to bowl, you, as a batter, also take your time. Use the first few balls to watch him closely. I’m not saying block him, but take singles initially; you can always make up for that run-rate later. I believe all our batters are good enough to catch up with a bowler like Tariq by investing time in observing him first,” concluded Hirwani.

Abu Malik recently appeared on the Maa Kasam show on YouTube where he recalled his time in reality show Bigg Boss 13. He also revealed why Sidharth initially didn’t want to be associated with Shehnaaz.
Talking about Sidharth, Abu Malik said, “Sidharth was a very good friend of mine, the one who passed away… Sidharth used to tell me about Shehnaaz and Asim (Asim Riaz). Asim did not know who Hitler was. Sidharth nudges me and says, ‘What a bloody idiot, look at him.'”
The music composer and singer continued, “Then what about Shehnaaz? Bole (Sidharth said), ‘If this guy doesn’t know who Hitler is, she doesn’t know where Germany is. Now you want me to be attached to them?’ And I’m telling, ‘Nahi ya…’ It was a good relationship. He’s like that.”
Despite this comment that Abu recalled, Sidharth and Shehnaaz eventually went on to share a beautiful bond. From the very first weeks, Shehnaaz openly expressed her fondness for Sidharth. Norwegian director Joachim Trier’s new film Sentimental Value takes a look at one such family, a dysfunctional one at that, and it so happens that they are linked to filmmaking. It is the Borg family house where we first lay our eyes, as a female voiceover takes us through its history, its various secrets and doorways, tracing the lives of its inhabitants over the decades. These glorious opening minutes lay the foundation of a film which continually surprises and delights, culminating in an intimate family portrait that hits too close to the heart.

The premise
Gustav Borg (Stellan Skarsgård) is a great filmmaker, but not a particularly good father. His divorce and resultant distance from two daughters, Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), have left permanent scars on their relationship. Gustav returns to Oslo, and Nora is right when she senses that he definitely wants something. Because there is no reason for him to reappear other than his own. Nora’s sadness is a living entity, a dark shadow that follows her like a ghost. A theatre actor, her need for affirmation and her untapped anger never leaves her alone. Agnes is much more tolerant, having started a family of her own. She was once an actor, but left that profession a long time ago.
Turns out, Gustav has written a script- his first one in a decade- and wants to cast Nora in the lead. She, perplexed at his audacity, rejects it outright. Gustav then chances upon American actress Rachel Kemp (Elle Fanning gets the most meta-role ever) and casts her instead. Rachel practices the lines in English and tries really hard to impress Gustav, and through her, the viewer gets to see what’s amiss.
Wonderfully written and acted
Trier, who co-wrote the script with Eskil Vogt, marvellously charts the lives of these characters with a keen ear for dialogue. The screenplay, novelistic in its authenticity and detail, confidently jumps between the years to trace the history of the Borg family at one instant and stays with Nora’s lived-in depression the next. The off-kilter moments of sharp wit also work tremendously, like the one where Gustav gifts DVDs of Irreversible and The Piano Teacher to his grandchild on his birthday. Or the sly look at how talent agents and PR work around the actor, following them around and hyping them up.
Yet what is Sentimental Value about? Is it about the making of Gustav’s new film? Or is it about Nora and Agnes coming to terms with their father? Why, it is about both: a filmmaker and a father, a film and a family, the presence of history and the question of endurance. This is a film that interrogates how films can become a mode of reconciliation, a space for catharsis. A melting pot of the personal and the political. Gustav might not realise why he behaves the way he does, but Agnes tries to find out. The generational trauma that binds Gustav and Nora also pulls them apart. Trier, fortunately, does not pick sides or make villains of these people. Although it does become a little heavy-handed at times. Sentimental Value writes itself a little too much to surprise.
It is Agnes who becomes the film’s conscience. Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas quietly devastates as the sister who sees through these people, the one who truly knows how lonely her sister has become. Her eyes are the soul of this film. One particularly moving sequence with her and Nora taking the time to talk to one another is the film’s clear standout moment of emotional truth. What a wonderful ensemble of actors Trier and his team have assembled! Perhaps the trickiest character is given to Elle Fanning, who plays a very good actor who must realise she is miscast. It is her best performance to date. She makes Rachel Kemp so much more: a curious, empathetic person who knows her worth. Her scenes with Gustav at the film festival are exquisite.
Meanwhile, Stellan Skarsgård is in career-best form as the absent father, who steadily realises that time is no longer in his hands. His actions have consequences. There’s so much just in the way his body language changes in the course of the film. Yet, Sentimental Value truly belongs to Renate Reinsve. The actor is breathtaking here as a woman who has had to live with depression and loneliness for years, an actor who digs up personal trauma to infuse her performance. She is alive on stage, but it takes everything out of her. For how long can she do that? For how long can she escape without closure?
A sublime, deeply moving film
Sentimental Value is the kind of film that makes the viewer see the world in a different light. It is a masterpiece. Trier has created a film of infinite tenderness and warmth, seeing filmmaking as a deeply flawed yet transcendent medium of creative expression. In films, we bring our hearts and our bodies. We see something on screen, and we want to know how fiction can move us so deeply. We wonder how much life must have gone into the characters. Trier suggests, yes, a lot. A lot has gone by, and a lot is yet to come. It will be hard, unfair, tiring, reckless, fast, and fulfilling. All we have to do is keep the door open.

Two sitting Philippine senators have been identified as “co-perpetrators” in former president Rodrigo Duterte‘s crimes against humanity trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC), documents released by prosecutors show.
Senators Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa and Christopher “Bong” Go are among eight current and former officials named in a document dated February 13 and posted to the court’s website late on Friday.

Duterte was arrested in the Philippines’ capital, Manila, in March 2025, and was swiftly flown to the Netherlands, where he has been held in ICC custody at The Hague. The 80-year-old insists his arrest was unlawful.
ICC prosecutors have charged him with three counts of crimes against humanity, alleging his involvement in at least 76 murders as part of his “war on drugs”.
“Duterte and his co-perpetrators shared a common plan or agreement to ‘neutralise’ alleged criminals in the Philippines [including those perceived or alleged to be associated with drug use, sale or production] through violent crimes including murder,” the prosecution document reads.
Dela Rosa, the former national police chief and enforcer of Duterte’s drug war, has previously said he believed he faced potential arrest and has been in hiding for months.
Go, re-elected in May in a landslide victory, was a key lieutenant of Duterte during both the latter’s terms as mayor of southern Davao City and as president from 2016 to 2022.
A representative of Dela Rosa said they had not yet seen the document. Go has yet to comment on the latest development.
It was not immediately clear if any of the men named in the prosecution document would face charges in court.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Kristina Conti, lawyer of several of the deceased victims’ families, noted that it’s the first time “significant details” were disclosed by the ICC to the public.
She said the inclusion of several high-ranking officials under Duterte showed that the deadly drug war under his presidency “was crafted not only to ensure implementation, but to ensure impunity”.
“The involvement of those in the investigating units, which should have acted as the killings happen, is material to the plan. This also emphasizes that the ‘war on drugs’ began in Davao,” Conti said.
Duterte is facing a four-day “confirmation of charges” hearing from February 23, in which judges will decide whether the prosecution’s allegations are strong enough to proceed to trial.
Judges have rejected arguments that the 80-year-old, who was arrested in March last year and transferred to the Netherlands the same day, was unfit to stand trial.
Go and Dela Rosa have been named as co-perpetrators in acts that took place during Duterte’s tenures as Davao mayor and president.
Former Philippine justice secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II, who served as a lawyer for Duterte in cases involving the so-called “Davao Death Squad”, is also among the eight men named.
Ross Tugade, an ICC-accredited lawyer from the Philippines, said in a post on Facebook that the inclusion of the names of former Duterte officials indicates “that the ICC has evidence” to show a “criminal structure” in the commission of the alleged crimes.
The first of three counts against Duterte concerns his alleged involvement as a co-perpetrator in 19 murders carried out between 2013 and 2016 while he was mayor of Davao City.
The second relates to 14 murders of so-called “High Value Targets” in 2016 and 2017 when Duterte was president.
The third charge covers 43 murders committed during “clearance” operations of lower-level alleged drug users or pushers.
These took place across the Philippines between 2016 and 2018, the prosecution alleged.
The ICC also on Friday allowed the addition of 500 more complainants against Duterte in the trial.
