The news agency PTI, citing sources, said that senior BJP leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, are likely to participate in the discussion on the bill.
Both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress have issued whip to their MPs to ensure their presence in the House. Key NDA colleagues Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Janata Dal (United), Shiv Sena and LJP (Ram Vilas) also issued a whip to their leaders, asking them to return the government’s stand.
While the future of the bill of the bill is unknown, it is noteworthy that the BJP -led NDA has 293 MPs in the Lok Sabha, which has the strength of 542 MPs.
Allegedly, LJP (Ram Vilas), led by TDP, JD (U) and Chirag Paswan, initially expressed some reservation on the bill, they begin to accept more after the parliamentary committee adopted some of their insight.
Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024
The controversial bill introduced in the Lok Sabha in August 2024 proposes 40 amendments to the provisions of the Waqf Act.
Amendments suggested amendments such as non-Muslim representation in Muslim women and Waqf boards and the regulation of Waqf boards of India and extensive changes in governance.
The bill to amend the Waqf Act, 1995 will make it mandatory for Waqf boards to register its properties with district collectors to ensure its actual assessment. Currently, most of the members of the WAQF board are selected, but once the new bill formally becomes a law, all members will be nominated by the government.
According to the Act of 1995, Waqf means “for the purposes inherent in Islam or permanent dedication of real estate as sacred, religious or charitable.”

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and KC Venugopal, Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav, NCP leader Supriya Sule, Kalyan Banerjee of TMC, and Sanjay Singh of AAP were present in the meeting.
