Constitution Debate, Parliament Winter Session Highlights: Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Rajya Sabha on the discussion on the “Glorious Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India” on Tuesday.

Earlier today, Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha JP Nadda said that even a good constitution can prove to be bad if those implementing it are not good. Nadda attacked the Congress over the Emergency, amendment to the Preamble of the Constitution and also raised the Article 370 issue. He said the nation is indebted to the members of the Constituent Assembly who shaped the Constitution.

Earlier today in the Lok Sabha, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal presented before the house two landmark bills, including the ONOP Bill, officially titled The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill.

The ONOP Bill aims to synchronise the tenures of the Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections, while the other bill proposes similar amendments for Delhi and other Union Territory Assemblies, according to a government statement.

ONOP has been a long-standing poll promise of the BJP-led NDA, which is expected to take shape and come into effect in the coming years. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is likely to refer the newly-tabled bills to a Joint Committee of Parliament for wider consultations, said sources.

Meanwhile, the opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav and MK Stalin have opposed the idea of simultaneous polls, calling the bill a move towards making of “authoritarian democracy.”
