Ramayana: Sunil Lahri says Ranbir Kapoor lacks innocence as Rama

The teaser of Nitesh Tiwari’s adaptation of Ramayana has sent everyone buzzing ever since it was unveiled on Thursday. The teaser gives the first official look at Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama. The portrayal has left the audience divided. While many have praised the glimpse, others were not convinced by Ranbir’s casting as Lord Rama. Among them is actor Sunil Lahri, the actor who played Lakshman in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic TV show Ramayana.

Sunil Lahri about Ranbir Kapoor in Ramayana

During an interview with DNA, Sunil Lahri reacted to the teaser. Although he refused to criticise the teaser’s VFX, saying it is just a showcase, he noted that ‘there are some factors that irked me’.

He added that a film cannot be judged solely based on a teaser. Reflecting on his iconic show, he highlighted that the emotions in Ramayan were so strong that even after 37–38 years, it is still regarded as the best adaptation of the epic and continues to connect with audiences. Sunil said, “Aap bhale Rs 4000-5000 crore ki film bana le, lekin agar aapka emotion quoitent strong nahi hua, toh log connect nahi karenge, and aapki film nahi chalegi. Emotion is very important.”

Talking about Ranbir’s first look as Rama, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Sunil said, “Ranbir looks ok, but the innocence is a little less. The patience, calm, and innocence Arun (Govil) had are missing here. But I`m sure he`ll justify the role with his acting.” While Sunil played Lakshman in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, Arun Govil played Lord Rama.

While discussions about Ranbir being able to justify playing the calm and composed Lord Rama after delivering a violent performance in Animal have been doing the rounds for a while, Sunil Lahri agreed with the perception. He added, “He looks a little harsh; he suits more for Laxmana or Bharat. For such a role, it`s always better to cast a fresh face. A new actor, with no image or controversy, is always an ideal match.”

About Ramayana

Ramayana is a two-part spectacle mounted on a massive budget of Rs 4000 crore, making it one of the most expensive Indian films ever made. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakhsman. The recently released Rama glimpse focused only on Lord Rama while giving fleeting glimpses at other characters, including Lakshman and Sita.

The first part is set to release on Diwali 2026, while the second instalment is planned for Diwali 2027.
