Bharat Bandh Today Live Updates: Schools and colleges may remain closed in some states including Kerala, Karnataka and Odisha if local organizations support the bandh.
Bharat Bandh today live updates: Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has called for ‘Bharat Bandh’ on Thursday, February 12, as part of its ongoing campaign against the recently announced India-US trade agreement. The nationwide protest has reportedly been planned by a joint platform of 10 central trade unions including INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF and UTUC.
SKM Governor Hannan Mollah said he disagrees with the deal as he accused the BJP of “surrendering to America’s manipulations”, citing adverse consequences for Indian farmers.
News agency ANI quoted Mollah as saying, “The compromise will be a betrayal of the farmers… We are surrendering to the ingenuity of America. The government has surrendered. Piyush Goyal should resign. He betrayed the Indian farmers. On this basis, we have started a campaign from February 4 to February 11, where SKM will go to the farmers. On the 12th, Bharat Bandh has been called for this.”
He said Indian produce would not be able to compete with the free flow of US imports in the market and “our farmers would be wiped out.”
Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday rallied farmers to the government’s defense of the India-US interim trade agreement, and declared that the day will be “written in golden letters” in India’s economic history.
