Ahmedabad: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday that India recently presented a bid to host the Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad and the country is likely to get permission in a very short time.
Shah said during the inauguration of Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Ahmedabad, “We have presented a bid for hosting the Commonwealth Games and there is a strong possibility that we will get permission for the Commonwealth Games to be hosted in Ahmedabad in Ahmedabad.”
He also said that the Government of India is trying to host the 2036 Olympic Games in Ahmedabad and revealed that by 2036 13 international programs will be organized in the city.
“The Government of India is making all efforts to ensure that the Olympic Games are held in Ahmedabad in 2036. By 2036, by 1336, 13 international programs will be held in Ahmedabad, resulting in the city to become a center for the game not only for Gujarat but also for the entire Asia.” Harsh Sanghvi.

“I have been in public life for a long time. I have seen many sports facilities. When this campus was being built, I have come here many times. I have seen videos of its development of many stages. But I am not hesitant to say that Veer Savarkar is the largest in India and the most modern sports complex in the world.”
He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, the country should not think about being number two, as Modi has set a target that India should try to achieve the number one position in every field by 2047. He said that when talking about every region, the game is the soul of the country, given that the first game in the world was held in India and the country with the most young population cannot be left behind. Shah said that Modi has not only made policies, but has also ensured that sports infrastructure should be world class, athletes should be world class, selection of athletes should be transparent and good performances should get a chance to represent India.

The 825-Gruth rupee Veer Savarkar Sports Complex is spread over 20 acres in Narnpura area of Ahmedabad and is divided into four blocks. Block an aquatic stadium with a capacity of 1,750 audiences and includes an Olympic-level swimming pool with artistic swimming, water polo and features for diving. Block B serves as a center for sports excellence with training facilities for Basketball, Volleyball, Taekwondo and Wushu, and provides housing for 300 athletes. The third block features an indoor multi-sport with 5,200 seating capacity for badminton, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, weightlifting, boxing, fencing, judo and wrestling. Block D is operated as a community sports center that offers facilities for table tennis, badminton, indoor shooting, snooker, squash, volleyball, tennis, basketball and includes a fitness center.

“There is an atmosphere of sports across the country today. In this sports complex and in other facilities in Ahmedabad, the World Police and Fire Games will be held in 2029,” Shah said.
Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi said that it took thirty months for the campus to be completed and Union Home Minister Shah held 16 review meetings to monitor its progress. Prior to the inauguration ceremony, two programs were already held in convenience – a Commonwealth weightlifting tournament and a national level sports competition. Sanghvi said that the Asian Aquatic Championship will be held from September 28 to participate in several countries with 1200 athletes.
Union Sports Minister Mansuh Mandavia described the inauguration as an important event, calling it the largest sports complex in India. He said that when asked how to develop the sports sector in this new India, PM Modi said that when India celebrates 100 years with independence, the country should be one of the top 5 sports countries in the world. To achieve this goal, in the last 11 years, significant development has taken place through initiatives like Khelo India and Fit India, which has a new ecosystem in the country. He said that improvement has been made through new sports policy and sports regime to strengthen the ecosystem, develop world -class infrastructure, provide women representing in sports associations, and make it easier for the dispute resolution of sports sector.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that the sports budget of the state has increased significantly Currently 486 crores, resulting in 23 district level sports facilities in 21 districts of the state. He said that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave is being developed in about 233 hectares near the world’s largest Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium. He said that a para-athletic center is also being developed for disabled athletes.
Earlier in the day, Shah attended the fifth All India Rajbhasha Conference in Gandhinagar as the chief guest on the occasion of Hindi Day 2025.
