Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: Prithvi Shaw hits 23-ball fifty as form peaks before IPL auction

Prithvi Shaw sent a clear message to Indian Premier League (IPL) scouts with a blistering fifty in the second round of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Friday, 28 November. The out-of-favour India opener led Maharashtra’s chase against Hyderabad at the JU Campus in Salt Lake, Kolkata.

Shaw smashed 66 off just 36 deliveries, hitting nine boundaries and three sixes. He shared a 117-run opening stand with Arshin Kulkarni in only 73 balls. Shaw reached his fifty in just 23 deliveries, making a strong statement of intent at the top of the order.

Maharashtra were set a steep target of 192 by Hyderabad in their second game of the domestic T20 tournament in Kolkata. Shaw walked out with purpose and took on a Hyderabad bowling attack that lacked big names from the very first over. He predominantly played in the V, hitting two of his three sixes with a straight bat. He scored 47 per cent of his runs on the off-side and 53 per cent on the leg-side, showcasing his fluency and form with the bat.

His opening partner Arshin also reached his fifty, taking 37 balls as Maharashtra made a blistering start to their chase of 192.

It was a captain’s knock of the highest quality. Shaw has been leading Maharashtra in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the absence of Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been called up for India duty for the one-day international series against South Africa, beginning on 30 November in Ranchi.

Shaw has been in fine form for Maharashtra in the 2025–26 domestic season after moving from Mumbai due to a lack of opportunities.
