T20 WC 2026: South Africa vs Zimbabwe dead rubber draws huge crowd in Delhi

Stepping out of the Delhi Gate Metro Station, the closest stop to the Arun Jaitley Stadium, one is immediately met by winding queues of enthusiastic cricket fans. Judging by the sheer noise and enthusiasm, you would be forgiven for thinking that the Indian team were already out on the field.

In reality, this match on the first Sunday of March was a clash between South Africa and Zimbabwe. On paper, it was inconsequential: the Proteas had already booked their semi-final ticket, while a resilient Zimbabwe had already been eliminated from the tournament. Yet, the lack of stakes didn’t deter the fans in India’s national capital.

Historically, empty seats were considered an inevitable backdrop for non-India match days. However, this tournament is proving to be a refreshing outlier. According to official figures, close to 25,000 fans attended the match, marking the highest turnout for a non-India game in Delhi during this T20 World Cup.

Speaking to some of the enthusiastic spectators, multiple reasons emerged for this pleasant change. Many fans had purchased tickets in advance, expecting a high-profile showdown had Australia qualified for the Super 8s. While for others, it was purely about the love of the game. As one father, attending with his seven-year-old son, simply put it, “I am here for my son”.

It is these “cricket romantics” who are redefining the tournament. Perhaps that young fan will one day tell the story. Until then, one can only hope this trend of vibrant crowd support continues.
