T20 World Cup: ICC suspends USA batter Aaron Jones on corruption charges

USA batter and former captain Aaron Jones has been provisionally suspended from all cricket after being charged with multiple breaches of anti-corruption rules by the International Cricket Council. The charges relate mainly to alleged match-fixing and a failure to cooperate with investigators, dealing a serious blow to USA cricket.

Jones has been charged with five offences under the anti-corruption codes of the ICC and Cricket West Indies. Most of the allegations are linked to the Bim10 tournament in the 2023–24 season, which comes under CWI jurisdiction. Two other charges relate to international matches governed by the ICC Code. In an official release, the ICC confirmed that Jones has been suspended with immediate effect.

“These charges are part of a wider investigation which is likely to result in further charges being issued against other participants in due course,” the ICC said.
“Jones has been provisionally suspended from all cricket with immediate effect and has 14 days from 28 January 2026 to respond to the charges.”

According to the ICC, Jones is accused of attempting to fix or improperly influence matches, failing to report approaches that breached anti-corruption rules, refusing to cooperate with investigators, and obstructing the investigation by concealing or tampering with information. Three of the charges fall under the CWI Anti-Corruption Code, while two relate to breaches of the ICC Code.

The 31-year-old was recently part of a group of 18 USA players training in Sri Lanka as part of preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup. With the suspension now in place, Jones is not eligible for selection, and the USA are yet to announce their final squad for the tournament.

A major setback for USA cricket

The development is a significant setback for USA cricket, given Jones’ importance to the team in recent years. He served as USA captain during the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was jointly hosted by the United States and the Caribbean islands, and was central to some of the team’s most memorable performances.

Jones made his international debut in 2019 and has since played 52 ODIs and 48 T20Is for the USA. At the 2024 T20 World Cup, he produced a match-winning 94 off 40 balls against Canada and followed it up with an unbeaten 36 off 26 balls in the famous victory over Pakistan, innings that brought him global attention.

Away from international cricket, Jones has featured in several franchise leagues, including the CPL, MLC and BPL. However, he has not represented the USA at international level since April 2025.

The ICC has made it clear that the case does not end with Jones, with further charges against other individuals possible as the investigation continues. For now, Jones’ immediate future remains uncertain, with the outcome of the process likely to have major consequences for both his career and USA cricket’s World Cup preparations.
