Tesla sparks EV push: Carmaker launches model Y in India; opens experience centers

American electric carmaker Tesla is exploring ways to develop an electric-vehicle ecosystem in India to support long-term growth and enhance the ownership experience. Since beginning deliveries in September, the company has sold 109 vehicles and is now planning to establish home charging units, install superchargers in major cities, and set up chargers at key destinations such as malls and hotels.Tesla India General Manager Sharad Agarwal explained, “So the future roadmap will be to have a charging infrastructure to cover all major cities. We always build our infrastructure around the lifestyle of our customers, where they eat, where they work, where they go for staycations.”Agarwal highlighted the environmental benefits of EV adoption, noting that major cities like Delhi and Mumbai struggle with high pollution levels. “We have delivered more than 8 million cars worldwide, which has helped reduce carbon emissions by 32 million tons. So that’s the kind of sustainable future we are talking about,” he said, stressing that air quality improvements are crucial to public health. On Tesla’s approach to sales, Agarwal said, “Our mission is to accelerate the world’s transition towards sustainability. And when we are talking of this mission, we are also not only looking at the product, but also the way we sell to our customers, how we bring these products to our customers.” Unlike traditional car dealerships, Tesla follows a direct-to-consumer model. The Gurugram charging station, set to be commissioned soon, will be Tesla’s fourth in India, joining other stations equipped with 16 superchargers and 10 destination chargers. Tesla entered the Indian market earlier this year as its 50th global market and launched two imported Model Y variants priced at Rs 59.89 lakh and Rs 67.89 lakh. Both models are shipped from Shanghai and are subject to a 70% import duty, making them significantly more expensive than in the US.Tesla opened its first experience centre in Mumbai in July, followed by a second location at Aerocity, Delhi, in August. The company is taking a cautious approach in India due to high import duties and limited service infrastructure, and currently has no plans for local production. On the global front, Tesla delivered nearly 497,000 vehicles in the September quarter of 2025 and reported a 12% increase in revenue, reaching $28.1 billion.
