Sunil Grover began his career in the entertainment sector in the late 1990s, but he rose to prominence when he joined Kapil Sharma on Comedy Nights with Kapil in 2013. Sunil`s personalities on the show helped him become a household figure, and more than a decade later, he remains one of television`s most popular comedy actors. However, as Sunil was on the verge of landing the largest chance of his life, he was going through a difficult period. In a recent interview, actress Upasana Singh said that Sunil was hospitalised due to depression just before beginning work on Kapil`s show.
Upasana Singh talks about Sunil Grover`s battle with depression
In a conversation with Lallantop Cinema, Upasana, who portrayed `Bua` on the show, revealed that the creative executives involved wanted to remove Sunil in the early days because they felt he couldn`t live up to the rest of the cast. “When he initially came in, he spoke at a slower pace. So the creative team on that show, wanted to fire him because they thought he couldn’t do it, and he couldn’t match up (to the rest of the cast). I told them then, and Sunil and all the others know about it, that he is a very good actor, you should keep him on,” she shared.
Sunil Grover`s viral gig before the show
Sunil`s most prominent gig prior to this show was doing radio spots in which he portrayed humorous characters, and his show, `Hansi Ke Phavarre`, was well-known in major cities. Sunil understood what to expect on Kapil`s show because of his radio expertise, according to Upasana.
She also revealed that Sunil was dealing with some mental health issues before beginning work on Comedy Nights. Upasana further quipped, “When Kapil’s show started, he was not well. I asked him what happened and he shared that he was hospitalised because of depression. He didn’t have much work either. When he came over to my house with Kapil, I didn’t even recognise him because he wasn’t doing much then. But he did so well, and we are such good friends now.”
Sunil remains a cast member on Kapil`s show on Netflix. The show recently completed its third season and is now on hiatus. Aside from that, Sunil has recently appeared on Dabba Cartel.
