South Africa’s women players came out wearing black kits during their second ODI against England in Durban on Sunday instead of their traditional green, which surprised many. But they are doing it for a cause.
The game is a “dedicated Black Day match in support of the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and the Proteas will wear a black kit. It will be the fourth edition,” said Cricket South Africa (CSA) in its official statement.
Teams have worn different-colour kits for similar social causes in the past, like the annual Pink Day celebrated by CSA, when the players have donned pink kits.
The England players are wearing black armbands. South Africa lead the three-match ODI series 1-0.

The GBV campaign this year started on November 25 and will end on December 10.
Cricket South Africa began their Black Day initiative to heighten public consciousness about GBV whilst providing assistance to women requiring support.
The Kingsmead ground in Durban is the designated venue to mark the ‘Black Day’ with a women’s cricket match, which first happened in 2021 on January 23 in an ODI between South Africa and Pakistan, eight months after the start of the campaign in April 2020.
