WPL 2025: Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana retained by MI and RCB as franchises announce retentions

NEW DELHI: The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 promises an exciting season, with teams announcing their retentions ahead of the upcoming auction.
Fans across India are thrilled as teams like Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, and Gujarat Giants confirm their lists of retained players on Thursday.
Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians (MI) have retained 14 players, including key contributors like captain Harmanpreet Kaur, Natalie Sciver-Brunt, and star all-rounders Amelia Kerr and Hayley Matthews.
The team maintains a strong core from its celebrated “Batch of 2024,” with players like Shabnim Ismail and Yastika Bhatia set to return.

However, MI said farewell to fan favourites like Issy Wong, known for her historic WPL hat-trick, alongside Humairaa Kaazi, Fatima Jaffer, and Priyanka Bala, ensuring room for new faces in the 2025 auction.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru
After a remarkable title-winning season in 2024, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have retained the majority of their championship squad, including skipper Smriti Mandhana and the WPL 2024 top scorers Ellyse Perry and Shreyanka Patil.
Retaining talents like Richa Ghosh and Asha Sobhana showcase the team’s commitment to long-term success.

RCB have, however, released players like Disha Kasat and Nadine de Klerk, opening opportunities in the upcoming mini-auction.

The Capitals, runners-up in both previous seasons, released players Laura Harris, Poonam Yadav, Ashwani Kumari, and Aparna Mondal, looking to adjust their squad composition to push for a maiden WPL title.
With a purse of INR 2.5 crores, Delhi’s side has flexibility to add key talent in the auction to strengthen their roster further.

The Giants parted ways with players like Sneh Rana and Veda Krishnamurthy, strategically retaining 14 players and leaving themselves INR 4.4 crores to make competitive bids.
Their focus in 2025 is building a balanced lineup capable of contending with the top teams.

The UP Warriorz (UPW) retained 14 key players, with stars like Alyssa Healy, Deepti Sharma, and Tahlia McGrath leading the squad.
Releasing Lauren Bell and a few other players, UPW has INR 3.9 crores available to enhance its lineup in the auction.

The team’s strategy aims to retain a strong foundation while adding targeted skills to maximize their chances in the next WPL season.
